‘Kind soul, outgoing’

- CRYSTAL FOX

A SCHOOL friend of a 19-year-old who died in a skateboarding tumble in Tamborine on Friday night says he was a “kind soul” who was “very outgoing, funny”.

Couper Smith died after falling from his skateboard while being towed by a vehicle believed to have been driven by his 17-year-old brother.

It happened almost outside their Ballantrae Rd home, with distraught family and friends first on the scene before paramedics arrived.

Friend and neighbour Laura Mckeown, 19, said she met Couper when both were 15 when she first moved to Tamborine Mountain State High.

She was grateful to have known him and “his kind soul”, she said.

“He was the kind of person that would do just about anything and everything for you,” she said. “He was very outgoing and funny.

“Such a kind soul and I am so devastated by what has just happened,” Ms Mckeown said.

She reminisced on bus rides to school together and campouts in each others’ backyards, saying he always helped out her family when they needed.

“And to the Smiths, I am so sorry for your loss,” Ms Mckeown said.

“No one should have to go through

that, especially lovely people like them.”

Couper’s uncle Brian Smith posted a heartfelt message on Facebook and said “these are the times you need to look around and cherish what is, as it may not be there next time you look”.

“My heart goes out to my brother Rob, his wife Michelle and son Rhys with the sudden loss of their son and brother,” he said.

Cousin Rhi Smith also shared a post to Facebook on Sunday and said she would miss her childhood best friend.

“We have lost our Couper, an important someone to many of us but my cousin Coups,” she said. “My childhood best friend. I will always cherish our memories growing up. I love you so much. Fly high smithy.”
