Bula bubble begins

How to have a Covid-safe Fiji holiday

-

Set your watches to Fiji time – travel to the Pacific island nation is back. In fact, so excited are fully vaccinated Aussies to visit our Pacific neighbour, holiday searches for Fiji increased by 200 per cent on Expedia since the “bula bubble” was announced in October. And in response, holiday providers have unleashed a bonanza of travel deals, particularly for families. But there are a few hoops you need to jump through.

Savvy tip 1

Testing: All travellers over 12 need to provide proof of a negative RT-PCR test performed within three days before travel. A test 48 hours after you arrive is also needed and you can only interact with Care Fiji Committed (CFC) businesses while awaiting results. Most tourism providers are CFC-approved, meaning you can get on with your holiday. Testing is done through your hotel or resort, but you’ll have to pay from FJD30 (about $20).

Savvy tip 2

Stays: You have to show proof of a confirmed three-night accommodation booking and transfers with CFC-approved providers.

Savvy tip 3

Insurance: Proof of international travel insurance covering Covid is also necessary. Not all insurance providers cover Covid and those that do may only cover certain things. For example, Cover-More covers medical costs overseas, cancellation if you’re diagnosed with Covid before departure and can’t travel, and additional expenses such as costs of quarantine. But it doesn’t cover expenses incurred from border closures or lockdowns.

Savvy tip 4

Out and about: With more than 90 per cent of the Fijian population and 100 per cent of CFC-approved tourism providers fully vaccinated, moving around in Fiji is safe. But you’ll need to wear a mask in public places, socially distance and download the CareFiji app to check in to businesses.

Savvy tip 5

Returning home: You need to have an RT-PCR test within three days of returning home. You can enter NSW, Victoria and the ACT without quarantining, but in other states, quarantine is still mandatory for international arrivals.
