Residents in a stink over Palmy sewage spill

- SAM STOLZ

PALM Beach residents were up the proverbial creek without a paddle after a pipe burst and filled a busy intersection with a “putrid” smelling sewage on Tuesday morning.

Cars were photographed driving through the muck at 19th and Townson Avenues and locals have started to kick up a stink over the smell, with one saying “it’s so bad”.

A woman on Facebook, Claire G Phunk, posted: “I just drove through a massive s**t puddle at the traffic lights. My car stinks.”

Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “A development appears to have ruptured a sewer and the whole intersection is flooded with urine. I just rode my motorbike through it and it absolutely stinks with it all running into the drains and straight into the canal. I rang council and they confirmed it’s sewage,” he said.

In a statement from the council, a spokesperson confirmed the flooding was a result of a burst sewerage main and said “the safety of our staff, residents and visitors is our number one priority”.

“The City has commenced repairs and will return services to normal as soon as possible but this will take several hours,” the statement read.

“Repair works will involve the use of machinery and tankers, as such some noise and odour may be experienced, and temporary lighting may be used. We will attempt to keep this to a minimum.

“Traffic control will be in place and motorists and pedestrians are asked to avoid the area if possible. Local traffic is asked to follow the instructions of on-site traffic control officers.

“The City will commence clean up and the area will be disinfected and deodorised ... we apologise for any inconvenience and thank all customers, residents and visitors for their patience and assistance.”
