OFF THE RECORD

-

SOMETIMES a saviour comes from the most unlikely of people. One among us was in trouble over a debt owed to a group that don’t take kindly to having money owed. After several promises of full and final payment failed to materialise, a ‘specialist’ was dispatched to extract the dosh or else. By chance the collector met up with a mate before he came knocking unannounced and they got to chatting about their lives. When the name of the debtor came up the other asked about the amount owed. It seems they had been childhood friends so he said that he would pay it in full and take on the arrears. End result – one beating avoided and the true meaning of friendship defined.

PERHAPS it should be explained to this person why most people get involved with charity work. Primarily without any thought of reward or recognition. A recent fundraising drive ended up achieving its desired result with money and goods raised to help a family going through hard times. Under normal circumstances that should have been the end of it – a crisis averted and those who helped, happy that they could contribute to the cause. Not so because one of those involved was mortified that their name was not mentioned in big bold letters across every media outlet in town. Lesson for life – it’s not always about you, you, you.

HAVING complained long and loud about the lack of single, suitable men around town, a winning candidate was found. Her friends collectively breathed a sigh of relief because she had been badgering them for months to help her find ‘The One’. The first date went off without a hitch but, Houston we have a problem. He hadn’t rung the next day to say thank you for a wonderful evening. On their next date she raised the subject but he explained that one of his young children had needed something urgently. Then she decided that his children had too much of a hold over his life – who knew children would be part of your life after a divorce? Finally she decided, without consultation, that moving in together would be a good idea. Going, going, gone!
