FOR the climate alarmists, here is the real science behind CO2.

The climate system is balanced when the total amount of solar radiation is absorbed by the infrared radiation to space and the rate of heat and latent energy distribution by convection is offset by the total radiation loss. This balance is the so-called greenhouse gas effect when the atmospheric average surface temperature of 15 degrees celsius is far greater than the radiation temperature of the surface of the Earth, -19 degrees celsius.

The role of the greenhouse gases is to cool the atmosphere by radiating energy to space. The dominant atmospheric gases such as nitrogen and oxygen cannot do this. The next most dominant gas argon cannot, but the molecules of CO2 and methane can. This radiation together with solar surface warming, generates convective instability and the shifting of massive amounts of energy, especially in the tropics, from surface to the upper atmosphere and polar regions.

The total radiative loss from the atmosphere is more than 107 watts/ sqm and the radiative forcing from doubling the current atmospheric CO2, is only 4 watts/sqm.

The greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and clouds emit infrared radiation because of their temperature and because the characteristic radiation emitted is in the longwave radiation. Unless energy was added to the atmosphere, the greenhouse gases and clouds would keep emitting energy until there was none left to emit. The Earth would then be frozen and sterile.

Thank goodness for the greenhouse gases. If the current CO2 doubles, the surface temperature will rise 0.3 degrees Celsius. Water vapour in the atmosphere dampens any CO2 effect. This is why in past times where CO2 content has been up to 25 times greater than now no runaway greenhouse occurred but certainly would have some billions of years ago if there had been no water on Earth.

DESPITE four vaccinations, wearing a mask and sterilising, I recently contracted Covid, source unknown.

Being high risk, but possibly because of vaccinations, I only had mild symptoms, the main one being a very sore throat. Having few symptoms, I assumed I only had a cold, but did a RAT test and found I was positive. A friend said he only had bronchitis when I asked about his croaky voice, but upon testing found he had Covid. Another positive just had a ticklish throat.

The biggest threat to us all is that many have the disease without being aware, and move through the community unprotected while being positive.

Remember, the infected person must isolate for a minimum of seven full days after first testing positive eg: from Sunday to Saturday inclusive if the positive test was on Saturday. And can only come out of isolation if there are no symptoms at the end of isolation. Otherwise they must stay in isolation. Mask wearing is compulsory for a further seven days after isolation. Don’t do any more RAT tests for at least 28 days after the first positive test as the results will be unreliable. IAN TIMMINS, MERMAID BEACH
