Teen cops joyride charges

A TEENAGER accused of taking a stolen car on a joyride across the city before hitting a man who clung to his bonnet for several hundred metres will remain in custody for at least a week.

On Monday, police charged Mudgeeraba man Tyson Molloy, 18, with one count each of entering premises and committing an indictable offence, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and driving without a licence.

Molloy was due to face Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday but did not appear because he was “exhibiting Covid symptoms”, according to his lawyer, Ivan Sayad, of Sans Law Associates.

He is expected to front court on August 25. Mr Sayad said a bail application for that date would be considered.

Police allege Molloy stole a mauve 2015 model Honda CRV from a Douma Dr, Mudgeeraba house around 2.45pm on Monday.

It is alleged he was seen driving at high speeds through Mudgeeraba before crashing into another vehicle.

The other car was being driven by a 43-year-old Mudgeeraba man, who exited his car following the crash.

Police allege Molloy then reversed the stolen vehicle before driving it into the man at speed, “collecting him on the bonnet”.

He allegedly drove along Mudgeeraba Rd into Hinkler Dr with the 43-year-old still on his bonnet. The older man sustained minor injuries.

After the victim got off the car, the public spotted the stolen car travelling on the wrong side of Hinkler Dr, police allege. Police discovered the stolen Honda in Regal Court, Highland Park about 5.15pm.

Police allege Molloy was found in the boot space of a 2008 BMW X5 wagon driven by a 37-year-old Highland Park woman.

Authorities believe the pair are known to each other.

The Highland Park woman was issued a traffic infringement notice, fined $1078 and racked up four demerit points for having an unrestrained passenger in the vehicle.

Her licence was suspended for failing to provide a saliva analysis for a drug test.

Molloy was arrested without incident.
