A READER warns that in order to keep a supply of eggs, we need to torture innocent beautiful animals (GCB 13/08). The inhumane treatment of animals is never an excuse and people who purchase eggs from a caged animal are promoting the industry. There is no such thing as cruelty-free eggs, as a rooster is executed for every egglaying hen.

The production of the caged egg begins at birth, with the separation of males from females. The males are executed using various methods, buried alive, suffocation but most commonly sent to mechanical crushing devices, none of which are very nice.

Females go off to get their beaks cut with a hot blade, then put into small cages in groups of about five hens. Due to the stress of such intense confinement, hens engage in unnatural behaviours. Selfmutilation and even cannibalism are customary.

It is common for hens to die in their cages from the monstrous conditions. They are left there with the live hens, for a considerable length of time. After two years they are sent to the slaughter house, where they are electrocuted and their throat cut.

So when readers are told of the benefits of caged eggs you need to weigh up the unethical production methods used.

I became a vegetarian because animals feel afraid, cold, hungry and unhappy and have a personality just like humans. I feel very deeply about vegetarianism and the pain caused to animals. Don’t pretend to be an animal lover, while contributing to animal abuse. “Men are the devils of the Earth, and the animals are the tormented souls.” SHAUN CUNNEEN, MOUNT NATHAN

I HAVE just got off the phone from the Canberra office of Andrew Giles, our present Minister for Immigration.

The purpose of my call was to express my profound disappointment at Mr Giles’ treatment of the South Australian Scottish family who are under threat by him of deportation.

This is not a fair go for these people. On the one hand you have the Biloela Sri Lankan family who came here illegally and then used the system beautifully by having two children here and spent years and millions of Australian taxpayer dollars wrangling their way to get to stay here permanently. That was despite several High Court rulings which found that they had no genuine refugee status but, of course, after a photo opportunity, Albo and co granted them permanent residency.

On the other hand, you have the South Australian Scottish family who came here legally,

10 years ago, have always worked and paid their own way and have contributed to Australia without taking anything. Surely these are the kind of people we want here.

We need to get up in arms about this. There is an old saying that cheats never prosper. Well, I say, in the case of the Biloela family, that is definitely incorrect. They have prospered and prospered well on the Australian taxpayers’ purse.

I call on Albo to have a photo opportunity also with the Scottish family, praise them for their contribution to Australia so far and then welcome them here with open arms as productive, decent members of the Australian community.

The phone number of the Minister’s office in Canberra is (02) 6277 4044 for anyone who also wants to speak in support of the Scottish family.

I have been doing the school pick-up run for a number of years now first at Palm Beach State school now Elanora High school. The speed of drivers in all sizes of vehicles has never changed. There needs to be more policing and larger fines even loss of licence around school zones. I dread the day we hear a child has been killed. Please please drivers slow down do the right thing by the school pupils. Nan.

Doug (13/8) if you had a cheque in front of you for $140m to play the game you love, no doubt you would sign up for LIV, just as Cameron Smith will. The game will re-unite over time, as did the likes of Super League and World Series Cricket. Pedro

Someone left the front door open at Parliament House, and Albo got out and is missing again. He’s got a black coat and has PM logo on his collar, of his shirt. He is registered, with the union but isn’t chipped. As he doesn’t eat chips anymore. If found please return to Parliament House.

It looks like American politics has sunk to a new low recently. Whatever you think of Donald Trump, rightly or wrongly he has been treated totally different to other Ex Presidents who have also committed crimes (The Clinton’s, Obama, the Biden family), mainly from the opposite party. They certainly don’t like outsiders disrupting their illegal and corrupt money-making ventures using the Presidential privileges and office to break the law to enrich themselves and their families. Whatever happens in future, Trump has fully exposed by the way politics work in the swamp called Washington DC, since Obama in particular came into office in 2009.

GP Crisis in Rural and Remote QLD (GCB 13/8). Simple solution: all those who gain entry to study medicine through the significantly easier “rural pathway” must

MESSAGE OF THE DAY: Re Karen’s Diner, why would i go out & pay to be abused when I can get that everyday at home, by the best “Karen”, luv u babe. Broadbeach Oldie.

spend 5 years practicing in a rural or remote area immediately after graduating. This would reduce reliance on just one poor doctor being overwhelmed in these areas as graduates would have to be mentored/ supervised. No paying their way out of doing rural time as they do now, no exceptions. I know of many who use this easier entry pathway, who attend elite city schools and then wince at the mention of having to go anywhere rural. I also know many incredibly high achievers who miss out on getting into med due to the relatively small number of places available for non-rural, noninternational, non-indigenous. Time to fix this flawed system and give rural dwellers more doctors.

Ian Timmins letter to the editor Saturday. I wholeheartedly agree with you about the ad showing the “funny” theft of chicken pieces. Ad Standards reply to you shows that they have very dodgy “standards”. Maid in Miami

My son is into this food sustainability kick and eating bugs, crickets etc. He bet me I wouldn’t try it so I said let me go to the shop and see what they have and I will bring some home to eat. Next day I’ve got home sat at the table and started eating. He looked at me and said what hell are those? Bugs I said Moreton Bay Bugs.

Why must people antagonise Magpies? If there are Magpies with babies or just a cantankerous one, why must people go out of their way to get a reaction. Cobblers2U

Haven’t had the slightest inkling to add

anything to football, climate change etc comments to Bulley’s chat page in the past week - bar one! Dunno where ignorant contributor got their false info, but thanks to toff-nosed Kingscliff residents rejecting a police station there, for fear of being inundated with riff-raff, lucky Tweed Heads folk now have a beautiful new Police Station smack bang in Tweed & choc-a-block full of coppers keeping us safe! Onya coppers! Thankyou!

Topo, who cares, if the Springboks do that, NZ get a breather to. JoB

Ref to article in bulletin 13/8, why do potholes need redoing every time it rains? Answer, I have seen them just shovelling in the tar and just stamping on it with their feet. They are not compacted and rain water seeps in under them and they crumble. If they were fixed properly they would not need redoing.

Tom Tate, there are currently no TV rights for the LIV golf tour so you can forget your Gold Coast coverage being beamed across the world. Don’t count your chickens nor spend my rates on more pipe dreams please! Cheers

No name (13/8), using a Kona, charging at home and using 2021 prices, the cost per km is about 6c for the EV and 10c for the petrol equivalent. But it varies from car to car and state to state. The Electric Vehicle Council uses averages of 4c for EVs and 14c for petrol vehicles. With solar panels, the EV cost per km would be less of course. Dr Karl Fan

America! What the hell is happening to

that once Great country? Absolute mess, divided by radicals and fools as Presidents. Bloody shame. Cooly Kev

To the Phantom remark, thank you, haven’t laughed so much for a while. Every day he lays there, just get on with it. Shaw Robina

Re question on cost of running an EV or petrol car. Don’t know the cost of electricity but your EV will need to clock up 100,000 kms before it lowers emissions enough to outclass the petrol one that you have now. So, if you are buying the car to save the environment you might just as well forget it. Joan.

Can anyone tell me why not even one climate prediction has eventuated in the course of 60 years of climate alarmism? Dozens of dates for sea level rise, melted Arctic ice, melted glaciers, dead coral, etc, etc have passed but alarmists still get away with their fear campaigns. No other group is so wrong so often. Jen.

Government is considering employing pensioners, good luck. I personally know people in their 50s, hard working, experience in their fields, may get some job interviews, but never any work. Businesses are pushing Government, to open Immigration flood gates, to bring cheap labour here. Australians can sit at home. Stan, GC

This is so frustrating. No to desalination plant. Build a dam.

The gardens push by the city as a visitor driver is not as far-fetched as it sounds. Many cities have an impressive ‘flower power’ offer. Sweet idea. Ivan

I wonder how the majority of American voters will accept this latest abuse of power attempting to negate Trump running for office again. They are showing real fear to stoop this low. How is this harassment allowed to continue?
