FALSE claims, CO2 does not warm the atmosphere by infra-red radiation. Evaporation and precipitation of water control the upper limit to air temperature.

The odd properties of water prevent either a runaway warming or permanent freezing of the Earth. Water allows nutrients to enter cells that sustain life, heat to be held in the atmosphere and oceans, as otherwise the air temperature would be -18C.

The oceans carry dissolved CO2 and micro-organisms that take CO2 from the atmosphere. The oceans contain 22 more times CO2 than the atmosphere. They, not the atmosphere, control the surface heat balance. However, we are bombarded with media opinion telling us exactly the reverse and that increases in atmospheric temperatures increase ocean temperature.

The sea surface is heated by solar energy and infra-red energy from clouds and greenhouse gases. This provides an upper limit to sea surface temperature. As the tropical sea surface temperature increases, additional heat is lost due to infrared emission and evaporation. A new sea surface temperature is reached when the CO2 infra-red forcing is balanced by the energy loss from the surface. If the atmospheric CO2 content is doubled, the sea surface temperature increases by about 0.3C. In the atmosphere, CO2 is a highly effective trap of energy in the infra-red wavelength band of 14 to 16.5 microns. Blocking the escape of heat radiation with wavelengths in this range reduces the radiating efficiency of the Earth by 15 per cent. If the atmosphere had no CO2, far more heat would be lost from Earth and the average surface temperature would be -3C.

The efficiency of the CO2 trap is essentially insensitive to the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. All the CO2 does is slow down heat loss. Atmospheric CO2 does not trap heat, as insulation does.

If the current atmospheric content of 400 part per million volume were doubled to 800 ppmv, there would be a minuscule impact on the radiation balance and the temperature. An increase in air temperature of 0.3C is likely. This is hardly catastrophic. Furthermore, the effects of the additional CO2 would be completely masked by other climate drivers such as the Sun and the Earth’s orbit and there would be great benefits derived from accelerated plant growth.

OH please, what is all this fuss about the young Finnish PM (Sanna Marin) dancing at a private party in her downtime away from official government duties.

Seems like social media will jump on anything to provide sensational fodder for those who haven’t a life and are willing to believe something more sinister.

And because of these so-called righteous opposition people, Ms Marin had no choice but to attend a drug test to clear any doubt that indeed it was no “Flour Party”.

One has to remember that Scandinavian culture is a lot more free than other countries but before anyone condemns her for letting her hair down, I think we all should concentrate on the many bungles that previous ex-Prime Ministers have made in times gone by.

Ms Marin has a very important position but to remain focused and maintain mental health, by all means she must enjoy a lighter side to her life. Seems a bit like the “Tall Poppy Syndrome”. Settle petals, as this one petal is pretty much squeaky clean from all reports. Pamela Delahunty-Hunter,

Looks like our Mayor has got his way. As a tour bus driver we have requests to stop in Surfers Paradise. The last remaining bus stop outside The Beachcomber is now taken up by four paid carparks. Tourists are coming back by coach and just this week we had 103 Japanese tourists wanting to stop in Surfers. We told them the only place left for us to park were the shopping centres. Surfers traders are missing out on many tourists. Barry Christie, Upper Coomera

Dr Kirwan, re GC-BN airport direct train. Apply for job with Min. Transport, you know more about the rail system than he. Flicka

Still the same on The Glitter Strip eh GCB. Commuters don’t wear masks on public transport despite being required to do so. And commuters don’t have to pay bus/tram fares despite being required to do so. Nowhere else in the world does this happen GCB unless you live in a Third World country perhaps. Me, I’m still silly enough to pay my fares, how stupid am I. George. Brisbane

Why can’t GCCC catch unleashed dogs (6) on beach & path tween Kirra & Tugun?

Opposition leader Peter Dutton says the PM, Anthony Albanese, has taken a “political opportunity” in criticising the former PM, Scott Morrison, for his secret ministries. As Peter Dutton well knows, that’s what happens in politics. You break conventions and get found out, your opponents call you out on it.

Magistrate tells serial car thief the court is not going to cop continual charges of committing criminal offences. Here’s a tip — Jail them so they stop laughing at you !

In secretly making himself a minister for five different departments, Scott

Morrison deceived his cabinet and all Australians. It seems probable he did so to keep the pandemic fears fresh, so he could score big donor dollars from vaccine manufacturers. He should resign in disgrace and be first on the stand in the Covid Trials. Bad Hat Harry, Surfers P

The UK has a power shortage caused by closing reliable coal-fired power stations and trying to get by using intermittent wind and solar. To solve that shortage they’re now going to build nuclear plants. They could’ve skipped the wind and solar step and saved themselves all the wasted money, stuffed environments, and misery inflicted on wildlife. Juss Sayen

Are there really still people who fail to wear seatbelts? Hopefully, the large fine will limit the number of offenders and save many lives.

The ScoMo debacle, although not illegal, suggests that as CEO of the country and like most company CEOs, they have the right to keep an objective eye on their businesses which includes the performance of their department heads especially if there are concerns about their effectiveness. Perhaps this is the case which led to ScoMo’s decision. Should he have shared this with his affected ministers? He did that when it was necessary. Integrity is not the key issue here but effective governance is the focus, like that of a company CEO to be across his company and heads of departments. Just maybe it was ScoMo’s concern of a few of his ministers that led to this conundrum in what were unprecedented times for Australians. NI Pacific Pines

It seems our “B” grade Premier has absolutely no understanding of the problems that over 44,000 pokies are causing. Just like our unaccountable judges who continually release repeat offenders so they can commit more crimes. Martin, Oxenford

What a Godsend for the hopeless Labor and Lefties Media talking about Scott Morrison’s past taking over some ministerial portfolios. Breaking news ABC, Ch9 – all the Lefties – all over it like the rush. Brilliant distraction from the obvious problems facing families here every day because hopeless, desperate Labor got no plan, no idea and no solutions how to fix it. Stan, GC

Where’s this ‘high five’ come from? Next person that says that to me will get a ‘high five’ around their chops! Angry Granny

Perhaps in response to Jus B (Text The Ed 19/8), you don’t watch Aus TV in favour of Brit and Nordic presentations. What a BBQ stopper! Good luck. I haven’t watched TV for 25 years, but relative to the real point of your piece, a fascination with real life or fictional police based shows, we grew up with Division 4, Homicide, Matlock Police, Bluey, Cop Shop et al … fundamentally brilliant in their time and springboarding many of Australia’s greatest actors not to mention the many cameos of established celebrities. Okay, Aunty Jack remains hard to view, but all things Norman Gunston made up for that. With KISS in the country, I beg everyone to go online for his 1980 interview with them where everyone including Ace was laughing their heads off. All the best everyone! Rev SF.

Albo needs to stop throwing mud at ScoMo over him taking on extra portfolios when he PM. Instead ScoMo should have been congratulated for taking on more workload. Even the legendary John Howard said he admired Mr Morrison for taking on more responsibilities when he could have avoided extra workload and instead toured the globe like Albo. Every trip ScoMo made overseas was very short and couldn’t come to his country quick enough, even when the bushfires began he interrupted his holiday in Hawaii and flew straight home to assist the victims. ScoMo spent fewer flying hours during his entire term in office than Albo has done in the first 3 months of his election win polluting the atmosphere with fossil fuel that he is on a world crusade to stamp out. Hypocrisy at its very worst. KenW.

While missing out on this year’s NRL Grand Final is unfortunate for QLD, it only has itself to blame. It’s all about money and money only. Even if the NSW government bid was $2m less than ours, they will make up the difference with 30,000 extra ticket sales over Suncorp stadium’s capacity. If average ticket prices are $100, that’s an extra $3m, if it’s higher it’s even more in the NRL kitty. So don’t expect it to come to QLD in future in a hurry unless fans are prepared to pay higher prices for the GF here to make up the difference, or Suncorp is upgraded to hold 80,000.The ultimate insult would be if goes to Melbourne first for the same reason.DS
