High marks for Show
Record attendance, entrants defy testing times
COST of living pressures didn’t stop a record turnout of more than 140,000 people from enjoying some fun, fairy floss and fireworks at this year’s Gold Coast Show.
This year’s attendance figure surpassed last year’s 120,000-strong crowd – with Friday being the busiest day at the Broadwater Parklands.
Event spokeswoman PetaJayne Habner said free entry played a big part in the crowds.
“People attended multiple times,” Ms Habner said.
“Because they didn’t have to buy a ticket, they could do a couple of hours each day.
“Times are tough, so it was great for people to be able to have fun for a few hours.
“People did it according to their own budgets.”
The sideshow alley was a crowd favourite and many of the popular and all-important show bags had sold out by Saturday.
“We had double the arts and home craft entrants than we’ve ever had before,” Ms Habner said.
“It’s a wonderful celebration of the Gold Coast that locals just embrace more and more.
“It’s part of the social fabric of the city.”
Poppy James, 11, enjoyed a day out with sister Lola, 7, and her Mum and Dad on Sunday.
“I was most excited about riding the camels – I’ve never rode on one before,” Poppy said. “It was really cool being up high because they’re really tall – bigger than I expected.
“And it was a bit bumpy, but it was really fun.”
The 11-year-old said a ride on the ferris wheel and picking up a show bag were also her highlights from the show.
In 2022, the event boasted more rides than ever before – making this year’s festivities the biggest ride-show in the country.
From the Skywalker, Hurricane, Waveswinger, Soundwave, Slide, Speed Boats, haunted house and bumper cars - there was a ride to suit all ages and tastes.
Crowds were also treated to live music performances from Gold Coast Music Awards finalist Chutney and other local musicians.
And for those craving carnival food, there was plenty of dagwood dogs, ice cream, slushies and fresh honey from local beekeepers.
