Staggs to miss cup and duo in doubt

-

BRISBANE Origin trio Pat Carrigan, Payne Haas and Kotoni Staggs all require offseason surgery.

The operations are set to affect the World Cup.

Staggs (pictured) will not play for Tonga in the tournament in England because of a shoulder reconstruction.

The NSW Origin centre is expected to be operated on this week and is facing a fivemonth recovery, putting him in doubt for the start of the NRL next year.

Staggs, 23, has played three Tests for Tonga, including this year’s mid-season match against New Zealand, and was considered a certain selection for the rising nation.

But he will not be travelling to England.

Aspiring Kangaroos representatives Haas and Carrigan also need operations following arduous campaigns.

Haas battled through painful shoulder injuries for most of the season and requires clean-out surgery.

A NSW Origin prop who has played two Tests for Australia, Haas is expected to recover in time to be available for the Kangaroos if chosen in coach Mal Meninga’s squad.

After a strong start to the year, Haas’s form dipped in the back end of the season due to the shoulder problems as Brisbane crashed from the top four to finish ninth.

He is in the mix to be selected for the World Cup but his absence from the NRL finals and the operation could affect his chances.

Carrigan also requires an operation on an ankle complaint following his breakout season with the Broncos.

The lock won the Wally Lewis Medal as the best State of Origin player in his debut campaign with the Maroons.

However, he only played 14 games for the Broncos due to injury and suspension.

Carrigan has delayed his operation, which is expected to sideline him for up to six weeks, while he waits to learn of his World Cup fate.

If he is selected in the Kangaroos squad, which appears likely following his sensational Origin series, he will wait until the completion of the tournament in late November to have an operation.
