Puck has a ton of cause for optimism

-

ONE-Test opener Will Pucovski left no one in any doubt he is on the path back to international cricket as he carved out a season-opening century for a Victorian second XI in his first innings since April.

Facing a NSW bowling attack that included frontline quicks Trent Copeland and Ben Dwarshuis, Pucovski soaked up more than 200 balls on Tuesday to reach 95 not out when stumps was called early on day two of the game in Coffs Harbour due to bad light.

But it did not take the now 24-year-old batting star long to reach triple figures to dispel any fears about his long-term future after a horror run with concussion.

It was Pucovski’s first hit in a state cap since he finished an injury-interrupted 2021-22 season in the Sheffield

Shield final, returning to cricket to dispel any doubts about his long-term future after repeated incidents of concussion.

Pucovski (pictured) has played only three first-class games since his Test debut against India in January 21, a situation that has stifled his international opportunities.

But his place in the pecking order for Australian selectors was confirmed when he was sent to India last month as part of a group of emerging batters and spinners, indicating he firmly remains a part of Australia’s future plans.

Pucovski also dispelled any suggestion he was contemplating walking away from the game.

“It’s just one of those things that you can’t help, with injuries. I am 24 years old and I have so much time,” he told cricinfo. “As I have said before, maybe it’s all a part of the beginning of the journey. I am going to be more ready to play again, hopefully, when I get an opportunity.”
