Busy stretch safety upgrade

- PAUL WESTON

SAFETY upgrades are being completed by the State Government on one of the busiest feeder roads from the Gold Coast hinterland through to the coastal strip.

The State Government is updating residents on road safety improvements on NerangMurwillumbah road.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said motorists were already benefiting from the $41 million project.

“Nerang-Murwillumbah Road is a crucial road for Gold Coasters, connecting parts of the hinterland to the Pacific Motorway, so it’s important they’re as safe as possible,” Mr Bailey said. “We’ve already completed a number of safety upgrades on the 36-kilometre stretch, including installing wide centre lines and several dedicated right turn lanes.

“Seven enforcement bays have also been built for use by the Queensland Police and emergency services, as well as for emergency stops, with another being built in Numinbah Valley.”

The Government was spending almost $5.2 billion on a four-year transport and road plan for the Coast, supporting 4300 secure jobs in the region.

“It’s another example of our commitment to making roads safer all across the state, helping Queenslanders get home sooner and safer,” Mr Bailey said.

More upgrades would be completed throughout the year, he added.

“Dedicated right turn lanes are being installed at Narrowleaf and Pine Creek roads, and the Bockow Park intersection is being widened,” Mr Bailey said.

“We’re also upgrading existing safety barriers and installing new ones with under-run protection.

“We thank motorists and residents for their patience during these important safety works.”
