WIDE PRAISE FOR OUTGOING SUNS CHAIRMAN

- ANDREW POTTS

OUTGOING Gold Coast Suns chairman Tony Cochrane has been lauded as a “fierce and relentless advocate” for the sport by fellow civic leaders.

The business bigwig, who has helmed the AFL club since 2016 announced on Wednesday he would stand down in March following round 1 of the season.

He will be replaced by Bob East. Mr Cochrane’s term, which saw significant changes at the club, has been praised for its impact and his legacy on the sport.

Gold Coast Titans chairman Dennis Watt today applauded Mr Cochrane’s tenure as chairman of The Suns.

“Tony has been a fierce and relentless advocate for his club and for his community,” he said.

“Although we are in opposing codes, it must be said that Tony has worked tirelessly to promote the Suns and the Gold Coast on the national stage. Our community has been enriched by his drive and his passion.

“Many young people have been given opportunities they might not otherwise have had as a result of the work of Tony and his team.

“Sport, and the opportunities it provides, is central to the Gold Coast’s undeniable claim as the best place in Australia to live, work and play.”

Mayor Tom Tate called Mr Cochrane a “great fighter”.

“He’s a passionate Gold Coaster who has delivered in spades,” he said.

“During Covid, the AFL was on its knees he came to me with the idea of doing a hub for the competition and from there we had more games played here than at the MCG.

“He’s innovative, energetic, passionate and even though he has other things to do, I am sure I’ll still see him down at the Suns.”
