Too Sharp best of stable’s squad

- SHAYNE O’CASS

CO-TRAINER Paul Jones has singled out bargain buy Too Sharp as the best of the stable’s 13 Sapphire Coast-bound stable residents on Monday.

Too Sharp finished runnerup in a field of five on debut on day two of the Sapphire Coast carnival on January 29 yet came away with his reputation intact, if not enhanced.

“It was 1000m first go and he lacked that little bit of ringcraft,’’ Jones said.

“And they were fast horses. We weren’t talking about an average 1000m maiden. As it played for the rest of the carnival, if you weren’t up on the speed, you probably didn’t have much chance.

“So for him to come from where he did over 1000m was a huge effort. They ran 33.3 seconds for the last 600m and I’d like to know what he ran his in but it was obviously sub 33.

“We left him down there at the Sapphire Coast stable and we picked this race out for him straight after his first run.’’

Too Sharp collected $6000 in under a minute on debut, just $2000 short of his purchase price at the 2020 Scone Yearling Sale from the draft of Matthew Sandblom.

“(Too Sharp) wasn’t an overly tall or big horse and that’s why Matthew approached us after he was passed in and we agreed on a price. Matthew took 25 per cent of him and we’re very happy with the horse since.’’

Team Jones/Joseph have more or less gift-wrapped Monday’s TAB Jockeys Challenge title to their trusted right-hand man, Quayde Krogh, who will wear the same red/yellow silks in all seven races on the card.

Krogh could easily get off to a flyer aboard the Kiwi-bred Dodgeball which is perfectly tuned for his mile mission.

And a win in Monday’s Brand Fences Maiden (1400m) will see $25,000 Magic Millions Yearling purchase Sebastian's Flyer showing a profit after just four starts.
