FORGET cookie-cutter, size-0 runway stars because Gold Coast start-up, Diversity Models, is changing the game.
The new business is helping professional women – of all sizes, ages, and cultural backgrounds – break into an industry that has traditionally been dominated by faces and bodies many can’t relate to.
There’s a balance of both beauty and brains at Diversity Models, with all talent working as business professionals or business owners.
“These models have an understanding of business, and that’s what makes it really easy for our clients when it comes to marketing and PR,” director Monique Jeremiah said.
“We like to embrace and promote our models, but also our clients.”
Ms Jeremiah said authenticity and diversity were the elements that set the brand apart from the rest.
“We’re a unique agency that looks for models who are natural and relatable – they don’t look fake,” she said.
“You don’t see that Botox look, so it’s bringing the everyday person to modelling.
“When we scout, we always look for charisma because that’s what our clients love to work with.”
And already the model for models is taking off with Ms Jeremiah saying she was looking to expand the business less than a year after its inception.
The idea stemmed from her own experience as a full-time model, where clients would often ask Ms Jeremiah for other talent “like her”.
“They all thought I had an agency but I was only modelling, then one day my hairdresser asked if I’d thought about starting my own,” she said.
“I said no, because I never imagined I’d run a modelling agency – I didn’t think I could do it.
“But modelling turned into a real love, every day is unique and fun.”
