Tram work is ‘sending me loopy’

A WOMAN living in the midst of tram construction says it is “sending her seriously loopy” with sleep deprivation.

Mermaid Beach resident Vanessa Girard shared her dismay online with a video of the noise coming from the light rail night works at 4am.

Construction on the light rail’s $1.2bn stage three began last month as the Gold Coast Highway from Broadbeach to Mermaid Beach was cut to two lanes in each direction.

Temporary sewers will be built in the middle of the highway at Mermaid Beach and workers are also going underground to upgrade existing services ahead of the tracks being laid down 2024.

2025. Ms Girard (pictured) said she believed the light rail was “the way forward” and would benefit those along the highway once completed.

“It’s the reality of growing cities”.

However, she said she had to put earplugs in to deal with the noise from the night works.

“The light rail works are seriously sending me loopy,” Ms Girard said.

“I am so sleep-deprived and pissed off.”

She said the noise had started in at 2am and decided to take a video of it at 4am.

Ms Girard said she had “no doubt” crime would go up once the light rail station was completed.

“Noise will too,” she said. “Drunks already annoy us when they step out of Mermaid Tavern.

“Now they will be loitering around the station too.”

GoldlinQ CEO Phil Mumford recently announced the involvement of local contractor CC Group in the light rail Stage 3 team.

“We want locals to be employed on this project so that the benefits are felt locally,” he said.

He said construction would create more than 760 jobs during the light rail’s third stage.
