Pimpama man denied bail on alleged stab charge

- AARON GOODWIN

A YOUNG Pimpama man accused of stabbing his friend twice during a fight has been told in court he is lucky he did not kill him.

Hunter Myers, 20, applied for bail via video link in the Redcliffe Magistrates Court on Monday, charged with possession of a knife in a public place and wounding.

Police will allege Mr Myers got into a fight with Bradley Lewis, a 21-year-old friend from Slacks Creek, at the corner of Macdonnell Road and Wave Street, Clontarf at 1.16am on March 11.

During the fight, it is alleged Mr Lewis was stabbed twice in the chest but the wounds were not life threatening.

Mr Lewis was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a stable condition.

Police prosecutor David Pollock told the court Mr Myers described Mr Lewis as a friend and noted Mr Myers had an interstate criminal history which included common assault and stalking.

“If someone can inflict these injuries to a friend, then they are a risk to the greater community in general,” Senior Sergeant Pollock said.

Myers’ lawyer Ms D’Souza said Mr Myers worked as an event co-ordinator.

Ms D’Souza said Myers was willing to accept an alcohol ban as a condition of bail.

Magistrate Paul Byrne denied bail and said Mr Myers should feel lucky he did not kill Mr Lewis.

“That decision will no doubt cause some distress and upset Mr Myers but he should be feeling very lucky, in that his offence will not be tacked onto the list of victims in Queensland who have died already this year due to knife attacks,” Mr Byrne said.

“Knives can be just as deadly as guns and it’s just not acceptable.”

Mr Myers was ordered to reappear at Redcliffe Magistrates Court on May 8.
