Passengers deserve to feel safe on transport

-

PUBLIC transport is a critical cog in the machinery that keeps any major city moving. Small or large, public transport gets cars off roads and provides cheap and accessible ways of getting around. What is essential though is that it is safe, not just during the day but especially at night.

The Bulletin today shines a light on concerns about the safety of patrons riding on the Gold Coast’s trams, buses and train line, particularly in the context of the youth crime crisis.

Bonney MP Sam O’Connor says: “Whether that be catching the train to Brisbane from Helensvale, catching a tram into Surfers Paradise or taking a bus around Labrador, people just do not feel safe. That is a consistent story. I have seen it for myself: it can be pretty scary to catch a tram at night”.

Mr O’Connor in his speech provided graphic details of youth crimes after residents and workers reached out to him.

This is a serious issue and one which requires action from police and the state government.

People have every right to feel safe in public and on transport.

It adds to the case which has long been put forward for special public transport marshals to patrol our trams and trains to ensure patrons’ safety.

Critics of the light rail will jump on these anecdotes as a yet another reason to halt the extension of the line to the border.

This is an absurd and untenable argument and holds no weight with decision makers, nor anyone who has an unblinkered view of the situation.

Public transport is critical and must continue to roll out but it must be safe for all those who use it.
