Sangha’s learned from Cup victory

- Lachlan McKirdy

Sydney Thunder spinner Tanveer Sangha admits being around Australia’s World Cup victory in India last year gave him the confidence to take his game to the next level.

Sangha recently put pen to paper on a new two-year deal with the Thunder and has taken six wickets at an average of 22.16 this season.

And while the side has work to do to contest the BBL finals series, Sangha can tell he is a better bowler because of his experiences over the past year.

“I think there’s not many other things you could ask for as a young player,” Sangha said. “Coming into a World Cup in India and then winning the World Cup.

“Being there for the 10 games and the final and looking at how the Australian team and the best of the best go about it, there’s not many better learnings than that.

“There’s a lot that I took from just understanding the way the top players and teams do it in that environment. There’s so much pressure in the final in a host nation.”

As a travelling reserve, Sangha got the chance to regularly bowl to Australia’s world champions and learn even more about Indian conditions. The leg-spinner has been tipped to become an allformat player for Australia in the future, and at 22, he has already made his ODI and T20I debut for his country.

But he knows the emphasis is now on him to make the most of the opportunities he has been given.

“It’s up to me at the end of the day to try, because it’s my career,” Sangha said.

“I know they (selectors) are thinking future-wise, but it’s up to me to look after my career. To still progress, learn and don’t just be there for the good times.

“You don’t want to be at the same stage in three or four years, you want to be better even if you have to make some mistakes or have some bad games. And just think in the future, if you want to be a better player, you don’t want to be the same person.”

While he didn’t get to play in the World Cup, Sangha has embraced the opportunity to be back on the field in the Big Bash after missing most of the 2022-23 season through a back injury.
