Man in hospital after stabbing

A man was rushed to hospital after he was allegedly stabbed in the chest at a Gold Coast park early on Thursday morning.

Emergency services were called to the incident at Arthur Earle Park in Nerang about 2.30am.

Police officers found a 51year-old man with a stab wound to his chest.

Paramedics rushed him to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious condition.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said the injury was not believed to be life threatening.

The spokesman said a 40year-old man was helping police with inquiries.

Aaron Wallis was among a handful of campers who were staying at the spot overnight.

“I knew there was a fight going on. I could hear them screaming and shouting. There was arguing all night though,” he said.

“There was a few of them there having a drink, they’d been going since I arrived back here at 10pm.”

While Mr Wallace wasn’t sure whether the group he described was involved in the alleged wounding, he said they were camping in the same spot the crime scene had been established.

“One of them was shouting pretty loud and like aggressive ‘you better not move’ and ‘you better stay there’,” he said.

A group of German backpackers had also pulled up at the rest stop to spend the night.

Felix Schmidtt was among them and said he’d had a brief encounter with the other group while having dinner.

“They came over when we were eating. They’d been drinking behind a white car,” Mr Schmidtt said.

“They were talking some crazy sh** to us.

“They had a few beers, too much I think.”

No one has been charged and officers are still trying to determine the weapon involved.
