Sun of a gun set to make surprise Singapore move

- Trenton Akers

will make a bucket list trip to Singapore to fill a spot on their jockey roster prior to racing in the jurisdiction shutting down later this year.

The Queensland-based son of a gun will look to follow in his famous father Jeff’s footsteps by winning the Group 1 Gold Cup later this year on Kranji’s final day of racing.

While many are fleeing racing in Singapore, Lloyd said it presented a huge opportunity to ride there before it shut downs.

“The prizemoney has increased for the final year, it’s actually very good prizemoney and everyone knows it is shutting down, but it’s good to have on the resume,” he said.

“I have always wanted to go up there and ride and I was running out of time, so I thought it was a good decision to get away from everything here for a bit and try my luck in Singapore.

“A couple of jockeys have already left, so they were looking for riders, hopefully that presents a few opportunities.

“There are some really good ones up there still like Vlad Duric, I just want to go up there and work hard.”

Jeff Lloyd won the Gold Cup at Singapore in 2006 as part of a successful stint in the city and Jaden says he is keen to win the last edition of the race.

He will make the move there next month.

“I go on a holiday for two weeks and then my first meeting there is in three weeks, I’m really looking forward to it,” Lloyd said.

“Dad won the Gold Cup up there, their biggest race, but he was there for about two years, so he has given me some advice. “I want to go over there and ride for everyone, I’m not linked to one in particular.

“They have upped everything for the final year, they only race once a week but the money has to be good.”

After 180 years of racing in Singapore, Kranji will be knocked down to make way for public housing, with the final meeting to be run on October 4.
