PLENTY OF ACTION AS COMP RETURNS

- Jake Garland

An outright win, a nailbiter and an abandoned match, all in the first round back for Coast cricket.

With the one-day final locked in, Cricket Gold Coast moved to two-day cricket after the three-week break over Christmas and new years and it was welcomed back in the most dramatic fashion.

Across the six senior grades that were meant to walk out on Saturday January 13, eight games didn’t go ahead.

Helensvale and Mudgeeraba in premier first grade was abandoned earlier in the week after it was revealed that fire ants had been found on Hession Oval.

The other seven were abandoned due to the rain that ravaged the Coast early Saturday morning and throughout the week.

WE LOOK BELOW AT THE FOUR PREMIER FIRST GRADE GAMES WITH A RESULT.

Burleigh CC 9-200 def Runaway Bay 10-174

Runaway Bay started day two at 9-160, with Sam Topping

on 73 and went on to add 11 more to his overnight score before being the last wicket to fall.

Burleigh lost their first wicket in the second over and the confidence for the Bay was full but a 43-run partnership between Jeffrey Roslin (16 from 75) and Jasper Schoenmaker (55 from 129) helped Burleigh back into the box seat.

The Bay then flipped the script, taking 4-47 to leave Burleigh at 6-108 and on the back foot.

Hayden Brain and Connor Reen got together to get their side over the line with Brain scoring 60 from 75 balls in the 67-run partnership.

Travis Harker was the pick of the bowlers for Runaway Bay with 3-31 from 19 overs.

Queens 10-210 def Coomera Hope Island 10-100 and 5-138

Coomera started day two on 1-2 after losing Jackson Armstrong late on day one and day two didn’t start any better with Michael Daffy also being removed for a duck to leave Coomera 2-10.

Wickets then fell in quick succession after, with Coomera losing 7-80 with opener

Decklin Ross showing real fight, top scored with 44 from 127 balls.

Being sent back in, Coomera looked to ensure they didn’t get beaten outright.

It didn’t start well in the second innings for Coomera as they dropped to 3-25 early before vice-captain Darren Collins (49 off 34 balls) and captain Jared Spies (22 off 72 balls) stood up for a 64 run partnership.

Spies was dismissed, leaving Coomera at 5-91 with Decklin Ross (31 not out from 35 balls) and James Kleinschmidt (17 not out from 23 balls) carrying

their team to the end of the day.

Harrison Winton did the damage with the ball in the first innings for Queens, picking up 4-34 from 19 overs, with Jackson Winton also picking up 3-29 from 23.1 overs. In the second innings, five bowlers picked up one wicket each.

Surfers Paradise 5-276d def Alberton 10-113 and 9-153

The Demons had already won on the first day, starting day two on 3-164, 51 runs ahead of Alberton.

Harold Jones continued from day one to bring a run-aball 107, combining with Jackson Driscoll (28 from 52) for a 77-run partnership.

Surfers Paradise welcomed back skipper Claye Beams who spent the week in Newcastle for the National Country Cricket Carnival.

Beams continued on his form, taking it to the bowlers with a quickfire 40 not out from 15 balls before declaring 163 runs ahead.

Alberton looked to return fire to the Surfers’ bowlers, quickly getting to 40 for the opening partnership before Michael Waldren claimed the first six wickets of the second innings. Skipper Reece Neyland did everything he could to avoid the outright loss, spending valuable time at the crease and top scoring with 51 not out from 111 balls. Waldren finished with 6-28 from 14 overs in the second innings.

Broadbeach Robina 10-141 def Southport 10-137

Day two began with one of the best catches of the season on the Coast.

Opener Joel Smith advanced down the pitch to Geeth Silva, getting an inside edge to forward square leg who ended up diving to his left, catching it one handed to leave Southport at 1-3 inside the first over.

From there, wickets fell in patches and clumps together, with the biggest partnership of 41 coming in the fifth wicket between Jarrod Leathem (24 from 78 balls) and Ryan Thorpe (42 from 53 balls).

Thorpe top scored for Southport, with Dhanushka Mitipolaarachchi also showing support with 23 from 35.

Sitting at 7-133, with just nine to win, Broadbeach took the last three wickets for just four runs, with the final wicket taken by Silva to claim 5-42 from 16.5 overs. Jaden Davis claimed 3-20 from 10 overs.
