Star Bronco in ankle injury scare

Adam Reynolds is confident he will be cleared of serious injury after suffering a training mishap in the build-up to Brisbane’s NRL premiership kickoff in Las Vegas.

The Broncos suffered a scare on Monday when Reynolds was assisted from the paddock by medicos after appearing to twist his ankle amid 36C heat at Red Hill.

The Broncos skipper was sent for scans, just six weeks out from Brisbane’s round one premiership opener against the Roosters in the US.

The loss of the No.7 for an extended period would be a big blow as Brisbane looks to snap its 18-year premiership drought.

Broncos medical staff were due to obtain results from scans on Monday afternoon, but it is understood Reynolds has told insiders he believes he has not sustained major damage to his ankle.

The Broncos will launch their 2024 pre-season challenge with a trial against the Cowboys on Sunday, February 18 in Mackay, before taking on the Sea Eagles at Brookvale six days later.

A minor syndesmosis injury could sideline Reynolds for two to three weeks and still put him on track to take part in Brisbane’s pre-season matches. The 33-year-old has had two turbulent pre-seasons since joining the Broncos from South Sydney.

Reynolds missed the premiership opener in 2022 due to lower leg soreness and a bout of Covid, while he was placed in cotton wool for the entire pre-season last year.

The halfback sat out Brisbane’s 2023 trial against the Titans and, after being named to face the Cowboys the following week, Reynolds was a late scratching after injuring his lower back.

But despite the worrying sight of Reynolds hobbling off on Monday, the Broncos would be surprised if their talismanic playmaker was rubbed out of their historic NRL trip to Sin City.

The 274-game stalwart, off contract at season’s end, had a sensational 2023 campaign but came under fire after a disappointing display in Brisbane’s last-minute loss to the Panthers in the grand final.
