Caulfield’s new Heath inner track will need another set of trials before being given the green light to race on after the new surface hosted its first official event on Monday morning.

While feedback on the new surface was positive, jockeys want to see how the track will race with full field sizes, given no more than seven horses competed in a single trial on Monday.

Melbourne Racing Club chief executive Josh Blanksby said they had hoped to get the tick of approval this week to race on the Heath before the anticipated April start date, but said they were happy to wait and run another set of trials to fulfil all requirements.

“The jockeys really liked the home turn and the camber, which was a concern when we were designing it,” he said.

“We had some trials with only five and six horses, so the jockeys have said they want some trials with the full 12 horses, which is a likely field size at the races.

“The other feedback was they would like more jockeys to have a go at the track before any races take place there. We will work with Racing Victoria and do another set of trials in the next few weeks to give it another run.”

With a bumper autumn carnival looming at Caulfield, Blanksby said they will not rush the Heath track, which originally raised concerns from the Victorian Jockeys’ Association due to the tightness of the inner track.

“Craig Williams noted that out the back, it felt like the course proper, which was good,” Blanksby said.

“There is a meeting scheduled April 17, which has been the aim date all along, so anything before that was going to be a bonus.

“We could try a race meeting in March if we get the sign offs done, otherwise we will stick to the April plan.”
