King Charles ‘full of admiration’ for Queenslanders
The King has relayed a message to Queenslanders through the Governor-General of Australia, expressing his admiration for those who responded to the slew of disastrous weather events over the Christmas period.
Queensland has been battered by several severe weather events since December, including the early arrival of Tropical Cyclone Jasper, deadly storms on Christmas night and Boxing Day and Tropical Cyclone Kirrily, which continues to dump rain in the state’s south.
Governor-General David Hurley on Monday shared a message from the King, as Mr Hurley and his wife Linda travelled to Tamborine Mountain on the Gold Coast to meet and thank the responders to the Christmas Day storm tragedy.
In his message, the King said he and wife Queen Camilla had been deeply concerned by the devastating impacts of recent weather events across Queensland and were “full of admiration” for rescue crews and mateship displayed by Queenslanders.
“The destructive fires of late last year, and the more recent tropical cyclones which have brought torrential rain and widespread flooding have, I know, brought unbearable pressures on the lives of those in many communities,” he said.
“We are full of admiration for those brave rescue crews and all the others who help protect life and defend property in difficult and often very dangerous circumstances.
“That spirit of mateship and helping those in need reflects the very best of Australian characteristics and makes us so proud of the resilience and determination of the Australian people.
“Our constant thoughts and sympathy are with all Queenslanders who are being continually impacted by these events.”
The Governor-General and Mrs Hurley were to meet with locals and members of the disaster response team at Tamborine Mountain on Monday, before travelling to Samford, Murrumba and Caboolture on Tuesday.
