Yoga studio creates own space with ‘science’ approach

- Ashleigh Jansen

Yogis of the Gold Coast have a new wellness space to call home.

In a city first, the Gold Coast’s only traditional hatha yoga studio, Dharma House, opened in Mudgeeraba on Sunday.

Owner Amiee Griffith said the practice was designed around the science of energy management.

“It’s difficult to think the mind into a certain state like stillness or joy,” Ms Griffith said.

“But if we can use energy through different ways of breathing or moving the body, that can influence the mind much more easily.”

Ms Griffith said that every posture was specifically designed around energy to provide and support a specific health outcome.

“If you are highly stressed and need a lot of grounding there is a style of practice just for that,” Ms Griffith said.

With two decades of yoga experience, Ms Griffith said the practice of hatha differed from regular yoga because it was based on a scientific approach.

“A regular yoga class is usually based on creativity, they may string a bunch of postures together that aren’t energetically aligned – meaning the outcome is either unpredictable or not very potent,” she said.

“But by practising this way with a science based approach you are getting a potent and specific outcome from your practice which is the way yoga was meant to be practised.”

Councillor Glenn Tozer officially opened the studio and said that it was a display of the suburb’s journey from “country village” to “lifestyle and wellness hub” in the style of the Northern Rivers.

“The Dharma House yoga studio joins a wide range of health and wellness practitioners, arts and crafts, organic markets, eclectic retail and of course great restaurants and hospitality outlets (in Mudgeeraba),” he said.

“While not a deliberate strategy, it’s naturally evolving to become the new Bangalow.”
