FLIGHTS AND NIGHTS
Fly-and-stay packages are usually exactly as advertised: flights and a few nights of accommodation. However, depending where you go, you might also find inclusions such as breakfasts, Wi-Fi, a cocktail on arrival, a bottle of wine on your first day, or even activities such as a day tour.
According to Daniel Finch, managing director of Wotif Group (which includes Expedia), it’s the easiest way to choose between different destinations, because packages mean you can compare apples with apples. “It’s an easy way to see what you’re getting, so you can weigh up the options and see what works best for you,” he says. “One might give you a better hotel, or one might give you a longer stay.”
TOP TIP: READ THE FINE PRINT
Make sure you know what’s included so you can make the most of it. “In some destinations, like Thailand, a lot of packages include a 30-minute massage. But if you’re staying somewhere for five nights and you forget about it until right at the end, that’s a real shame,” says Daniel.
When you book a tour, the power of numbers helps maximise value. As a general rule, you can expect all accommodation, transportation, a guide, most sightseeing and activities and a good percentage of the meals to be included. It’s great for the hip-pocket, not only because operators can often get better rates with providers, but also because you share the costs with other travellers.
“We really pull the itinerary apart and only include things that add value – that way, you’re not paying for things you won’t appreciate,” says Brendon Cooper, cofounder and chief product officer at Inspiring Vacations. “Tours are a great way to make your funds go further.”
TOP TIP: CONSIDER THE LOW SEASON
Some months will always be more expensive than others, simply because demand surges when the weather is nicest. “Shoulder seasons are generally cheaper because of the weather, either because it’s hotter or colder, but you see the same things, meet the same people, experience the same things,” says Brendon.
