Tall order but tower has all the colour of Opera House
A $1.3m piece of art which is believed to be the city’s largest has been completed.
The multistorey work, by veteran artist Lindy Lee, spans several storeys of developer S & S Projects’ Awaken Residences tower in Rainbow Bay.
Ms Lee, who has been an artist for more than 40 years, said she hoped the piece, which lights up and can be changed to fit themes, would become the city’s answer to the Sydney Opera House.
She said it could be “lit up in colours to coincide with a calendar of events much like the Sydney Opera House during the State of Origin, breast cancer awareness month, pride week and more”.
“I’m thrilled to finally see this artwork come to life and I truly believe that this is going to become a jewel in the crown for Rainbow Bay and an attraction for locals and tourists visiting the area,” she said.
“The artwork draws from considered research into the site’s character and history, framing a curatorial approach for a landmark to reflect the distinct elements of this location and the community.”
The tower, which is home to the newly opened Gambaro’s Pipi restaurant, was completed earlier this year and replaced the much-loved S & S boss Paul Gedoun said the artwork “was intended to bring incomparable creativity to the Gold Coast and create a cultural focal point for the community to enjoy”.
“We wanted to create something remarkable on this site, with a work of art that aligns with the key elements of the relaxed Rainbow Bay lifestyle – the sun, sea and surf, while reflecting on the area’s history and geographical significance,” he said.
“We are proud to unveil this art as an expression of our commitment to bringing incomparable aesthetic value to the vibrant community of Rainbow Bay.”
