SEASON GUIDE STAR SHECK: THE FINAL FRONTIER

- Adam Mobbs Rating: 7/10 Rating: 7/10 Rating: 8.5/10

Second-year syndrome is normally reserved for players, but in 2024, coach Andrew Webster will want to prove the curse as nothing more than a myth. Pundits have predicted a slide for the Warriors this year but the addition of Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Chanel Harris-Tavita and Kurt Capewell strengthen Webster’s chances of consecutive finals appearances.

BACKS

Breakout star and centre Rocco Berry will only benefit by the injection of Roger Tuivasa-Sheck in the backs. The prodigal son’s work ethic and experience will help him make the transition from fullback to centre.

On the edges, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak has found his tryscoring best but Marcelo Montoya must improve his defensive reads in 2024.

Youngster Ali Leiataua will be pushing for selection.

SPINE

Halfback Shaun Johnson will be the key to the Warriors’ success with his game management and experience coming to the fore in 2023.

Te Maire Martin, Dylan Walker and Chanel Harris-Tavita provide ample depth in the halves along with Luke Metcalf, who has barely scratched the surface of his potential. Charnze NicollKlokstad has shut out Tuivasa-Sheck at fullback.

Hooker Wayde Egan’s craftiness from dummy-half will again be crucial to the attack.

The addition of premiershipwinning backrower Kurt Capewell from the

Broncos adds premiership pedigree to the pack. Addin Fonua-Blake will again be in the mix for the mantle as best prop in the game. Mitch Barnett has proved a worthy starter up front. Bunty Afoa’s defence has gone from strength to strength, and so has his work rate. Marata Niukore brings aggression and mongrel, whether on an edge or off the bench.

Stalwart Tohu Harris is the glue in the middle. Tom Ale and Jacob Laban add depth to an already formidable pack.

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck returns to the NRL from rugby into a Warriors outfit that now resembles a title contender. The side missed a player of Tuivasa-Sheck’s calibre and experience in last year’s finals. An elusive ball runner with size and speed, RTS has the skill-set to help take the Warriors to the next level.
