Broncos skipper Adam Reynolds will miss his chance for revenge against grand final conquerors Penrith and could be joined on the sidelines by powerhouse Payne Haas.

Reynolds stayed in the gym with heavy strapping over his right knee at the Broncos’ Sunday training session and coach Kevin Walters said he would not play in Thursday night’s blockbuster in Penrith.

Back-up half Jock Madden, who played five matches last season after joining the club from Wests Tigers, will get to showcase his wares for the chance to replace Reynolds when the veteran calls time on his career.

Haas required scans on a knee injury that meant he also did not train on Sunday.

“Payne has been named … we are still not 100 per cent sure he will be playing,’’ Walters said. “He has had some scans. There was not too much (wrong) but he is still not right to go at this stage.’’ Walters said he would lean on the side of caution if it was a tight call with Haas.

“We are two rounds into the season. Keeping in mind the health and welfare of our players. We have to make sure the players who take the field are in the position where they can do their roles.’’

The Broncos will promote Xavier Willison to the squad if Haas is out. The towering Willison has played 11 first grade games since his debut for the club three years ago.

Walters feels Madden is up to the challenge of facing the premiers. “Every time he has had an opportunity he has played really well for us. We expect it will be no different for us in Penrith,” the coach said.

“It is a great opportunity for Jock to showcase his skills. He is a different player to ‘Reyno’ but an equally important member of the team.

“He is maturing. We have a lot of confidence in him and the skill set he brings to the club which is why he is here.’’
