Trainer resists Sydney assault

- Ben Dorries

In-form trainer Stuart Kendrick has resisted the temptation to deploy boom twoyear-old Can’t Recall One in Sydney on Saturday, preferring to keep his powder dry for the Queensland winter carnival.

Can’t Recall One may not have beaten much but he has done it in outstanding style with a pair of head-turning wins which included a last-to-first romp by more than four lengths at Eagle Farm last start. Hong Kong buyers have been circling, but for the moment he is staying put.

Kendrick, who trained five winners at his home Sunshine Coast track last Sunday to continue a strong run of recent success for his stable, had Can’t Recall One nominated for Saturday’s Group 3 Baillieu Handicap at Rosehill.

But he has instead opted to give the two-year-old son of Reliable Man a freshen-up and will aim at the riches of the winter carnival which could include tilts at the $1m Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) and the $1m Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m).

“He worked really well last Saturday morning but we had to make a decision and we have decided we will look at heading to the Sires’ and the JJ Atkins,” Kendrick said.

“The Sydney two-year-old races are still holding up fairly strongly so we have decided to give him a freshen-up.

“We will give him a week or 10 days off, right now, to give him enough time to get ready for the (Queensland) carnival.

“Michael Rodd rides him and he says he just goes to sleep early in his races and as soon as you ask him to do something he just goes into overdrive.

“Hopefully he will be pretty competitive going into winter.”
