Monster storm on the way

- Tess McCracken Keith Woods

A weather system moving north towards Queensland could dump up to 200mm of rain, and meteorologists are warning residents to be prepared for flash flooding.

Sky News meteorologist Rob Sharpe said the weather system could form into an East Coast low, causing damaging winds and heavy rainfall, with potential for 50mm of rain a day.

“The rain will really ramp up Thursday around the border of NSW and Queensland and then it’s going to run down the coast, maybe with some damaging winds and damaging surf.”

The Bureau of Meteorology predicted the cold front would continue to cause “heavy falls” in Victoria over North East and parts of Central, East Gippsland, Northern Country, North Central and West and South Gippsland Forecast Districts on Tuesday morning.

The band was expected to move through far northern NSW and southern Queensland on Wednesday.

The trough of low pressure was likely to cause torrential rain and gale-force winds from southern Queensland to eastern Tasmania.

A car belonging to a man found dead in a Gold Coast apartment was stolen from outside the unit just over 24 hours later, with shocked police slamming thieves for the “very low act”.

Hasel Liu, 31, was found dead in the Coolangatta apartment he shared with his two-year-old daughter when police conducted a welfare check on Friday morning.

The young girl was found in the apartment with her father when he was discovered deceased.

About 8pm on Saturday night police were again called to the Stapylton St address after Mr Liu’s black Mazda was stolen.

Neighbours had reportedly heard intruders inside Mr Liu’s apartment before the vehicle was taken.

A police spokesman said officers had not yet been able to find the vehicle and investigations were continuing.

It is understood a number of persons of interest have been identified in the case.

Superintendent Peter Miles from the Gold Coast police said the theft was an extremely “low act”. “It doesn’t get much worse than that, stealing from the dead,” he said.

“He’s got a two-year-old daughter. That car could (have been) sold to provide funds for her upbringing.

“It’s a pretty low act.

“It just shows you how low some people are willing to go.”

The cause of Mr Liu’s death has yet to be determined, with police waiting on autopsy results before preparing a report from the coroner. At this point it is not being treated as suspicious.

Tributes have been paid to the Iraqi national, who is believed to have moved to the Gold Coast in search of a better life.

His brother Lucas Marcas told 7News on Sunday that Mr Liu was someone who always looked out for other people.

“Everybody that knows him, he’s a loving guy, caring guy,” Mr Marcas said.

“He was always going helping. Does everything people.”
