Latest stage of light rail resumes

- Andrew Potts

Construction of the light rail’s third stage, between Broadbeach and Burleigh Heads, will resume on Sunday.

Work was paused during the Easter period after the demolition of a section of the Broadbeach south station as part of the extension.

GoldlinQ CEO Phil Mumford said the work coincided with the arrival of five new trains at the Southport depot, where they will be stored for use on the network.

“Being here this week is a reminder that these trams will soon be carrying passengers to Mermaid Beach, Nobby Beach, Miami and Burleigh,” he said.

“Work will restart from Sunday after the Easter break and we will have about 70 active fronts and 60 crews delivering infrastructure and civil work from Broadbeach to Burleigh.

“(The demolished) platform was always intended to be temporary and to be demolished when light rail continued south from Broadbeach.

“Now that has occurred, and work has commenced on construction of a permanent northbound platform and a secondary stabling area for two trams.”

The next phase of work will focus on building a new turnleft lane onto the Gold Coast Highway from the station, as well as completing pavement works at Nobby Beach.

“This platform was always intended to be temporary and to be demolished when light rail continued south from Broadbeach,” he said.

“Business operators in the northern part of the precinct will see fencing moved out of the way in coming days, which will be welcome.

“The Stage 3 workforce and staff will measure about 650 people.”

Mr Mumford said almost 16km of drainage, water, sewerage and communications infrastructure has been relocated and upgraded since works started in late 2022.

The laying of the track and construction of the stations are among the last works to be done before construction is completed in late 2025.
