Ponga open to Maroons switch

- Pamela Whaley

Newcastle fullback Kalyn Ponga has put up his hand for a new role in the State of Origin arena, which could make him a ready-made option for an injury-affected Cameron Munster.

The Dally M medallist withdrew from last year’s series to concentrate on making NRL finals with the Knights, but has made himself available for this year’s series, which starts in less than two months.

Coach Billy Slater has previously said he was open to selecting both Ponga and Brisbane fullback Reece Walsh in the same squad.

But Munster’s injury troubles could make the Knights’ No.1 an essential utility.

Asked on Monday if he would consider playing a different position in the Maroon jersey, Ponga said: “Definitely.

“Again, Billy’s a great coach, I love playing for Queensland and I love playing for him, so whatever decisions he makes I’ll support him and whatever he thinks is best for the team.

“But I can’t think about that right now, I need to focus on what’s happening here (at the Knights).”

Ponga’s willingness will be welcomed by the Maroons after Queensland champion Munster gave a troubling update to his ongoing groin condition on Monday, saying he would not be 100 per cent in most games this season.

The Melbourne five-eighth missed the first three games of the season for Storm with a temperamental injury that baffled club’s medical staff.

“Just mentally trying to get through those demons, the body is going to probably be 70 to 80 per cent most games, and I’ve just going to be mentally strong enough to play and get through it,” Munster said.
