‘Talented, kind, gutsy’

Mates, loved ones mourn film industry veteran

Heartfelt tributes have been paid to a trailblazi­ng movie industry veteran, with friends and colleagues rememberin­g a “vibrant and rare character” ahead of her memorial on Wednesday.

The film industry has been rocked by the news that highly respected camera assistant Riki Byrne, who worked on movies including True Spirit, The Condemned, House of Wax and The Little Death, passed away recently.

Tributes for the former Emmanuel College student have flooded social media pages, with friends and colleagues sharing their shock and sadness at the loss of someone renowned for both her profession­alism, and infectious personalit­y.

“In an industry and a department where women of our era are definitely scarce... Riki’s presence was not only invaluable but groundbrea­king,” Miranda Porter wrote.

“Together, we faced challenges, revelled in successes, and created memories that will forever be cherished.

“Our recent collaborat­ion in Cairns stands as a testament to Rik’s talent, dedication, creative spirit and tireless work ethic.

“I wish I had captured more moments with her, the impact of her presence in my life is indelible.”

Reflecting Ms Byrne’s high standing in the industry, a tribute was also paid by the Australian Cinematogr­aphers Society of Queensland.

“ACS Queensland is saddened to hear about the passing of camera assistant Riki Byrne. Riki was a mainstay of the local industry over the last 20 years. Known for her positive enthusiasm and energy she was a much loved colleague and mentor to many,” the organisati­on said.

“Our deepest sympathies to Riki’s family and friends at this time.”

Peter Barker said he was “shattered” to hear the news of Ms Byrne’s passing, saying she was “a kind, gentle, sweet soul” who was “gone way too soon”, while Jason Hargreaves said she was a “beautiful person and wonderful colleague” and Luke Jeffrey remembered a “great role model” with “the toughest work ethic”.

VA Digital Hire said it was “so sad” to learn of Ms Byrne’s passing.

“Everyone loved Riki, not only for her profession­alism, but she was a ray of sunshine. Always a complete joy to be around,” a post from the business said.

Tara Aucoin said that “to know Riki was to adore her and her playfulnes­s”.

“She was a light everywhere she went,” she said.

“Gone way too soon. Riki will be missed in a way that’s hard to comprehend.”

In a heartfelt tribute, Douglas Brook said hearts had been broken by news of Ms Byrne’s passing.

“And hearts open with so much love and appreciati­on for you,” he wrote.

“So now we can see your life from beginning to end.

“We can see that you were a warrior and a fun aware spark – gutsy wrote.

“You lived and worked in creativity. So many incredible film shoots. People dream of working in film and you did it – boy did you do it!”

A memorial for Ms Byrne was held on Froggy Beach in Coolangatt­a yesterday afternoon, with friends and family asked to wear colourful clothing in honour of a “vibrant and rare character”.

“Colour, sparkles, scarves and good vibes, that was our Riki,” read the family request.

Brook - gathered on Froggy Beach in Coolangatt­a on Wednesday afternoon for an emotional memorial service for Ms Byrne.

Against the background of a blue sky and gently crashing waves mourners - many of whom were carrying sunflowers - were told of her “peaceful, kind and giving nature”.

The crowd, gathered tightly in a semi circle on the sand, also heard how Ms Byrne “had an impact on the lives of so many”.

At the conclusion of the service, Ms Byrne’s family made their way to the water, where they scattered her ashes in the waves.
