Young guns to watch at surf life saving titles

- Amanda Lulham

They are the budding stars of Australian surf life saving from across the country and they are about to hit the sand and surf in a mass wave at the Aussies on the Sunshine Coast.

These young guns kick off an extraordinary nine days of surf life saving action this weekend in a preview of what is to come in surf sport in upcoming years.

The Aussies run from April 13-21 in 2024 and will be raced from the Alexandra Headland SLSC, Maroochydore SLSC, Mooloolaba SLSC and Coolum SLSC.

More than 7000 competitors will converge on the coast for the annual sporting event, which is the largest event of its kind in the world.

But on days one and two the spotlight is firmly on the rising stars of the sport as they vie for the first medals of the iconic championship.

We’ve spoken to the experts and here are some of the Gold Coast young guns to keep your eye on during the opening weekend of a blockbuster Aussies 2024.

Kingston Lowe – BMD Northcliffe – U15 Male

Kingston was crowned the U14 ironman at last year’s Aussies and is keen to defend up an age.

He also won a bronze in the U15 Ironman at the Shannon Eckstein Ironman Classic and silver in the same race at the Queensland state titles.

Taj Murray – North Burleigh – U15 Male

Won gold in the U15 Male Board Rescue with teammate Byron McParland.

He also came up with an individual bronze in the surf race at the state championships.

Lily Moana – North Burleigh and Sooke Paley – Tugun – U14 Female

This young pair have gone head-to-head all season in Queensland. They have shared the spoils across the Queensland Beach Series and also the Queensland championships. Both will be looking to continue their successful season – and rivalry – at the Aussies.

Javyn Johnson – Surfers Paradise – U14 Male

Watch out for young speedster Javyn in the beach flags.

A talented athlete, he is coached by the greatest male flagger of all time, Simon Harris.
