Lifeguard recounts horror trying to save friend

- William Tyson

He’s known for saving lives on our beaches, but lifeguard Andrew Reid displayed heroics in Bondi Junction on Saturday afternoon when he was faced with “horrendous” scenes during a terrifying stabbing attack that killed one of his friends and five others.

The Bondi Rescue star was buying a bed when a retail worker told him: “Everyone has to leave, people are being stabbed outside.”

After the shutters came down in Myer where Reid was seeking refuge, he spotted a woman in desperate need of help and without hesitation, the father of three asked to be let out so he could render first aid.

“I went around the corner of the escalators and what I saw next was … horrendous.

There were multiple victims spread out over 50 metres.”

The lifeguard used clothes from Cotton On to stem the bleeding on the first victim he treated.

“And then there was another lady about 50 metres away from us who was in a really bad way,” he said.

One of the female victims succumbed to her injuries and words could not describe what the lifeguard saw next. “And then I went to the next (victim) where there was maybe one ambulance officer working and as I went to her I just saw this empty pram and I was like, ‘Oh my god, I’ve got three young kids. What the f––k is that doing here? Where’s the baby? Where’s the Mum?”

That’s when Mr Reid made the tragic link that one of the deceased victims he worked on was his friend

Ash Good.

“I can tell you that she was one of the most beautiful people you’ve ever met,” Reid said. “She turned up to our run group at 5am with the biggest smile on her face … And she just wanted to be a mum, and she was given that chance and she was doing an amazing job until a scumbag took it away from her.”
