Cat’s out of the bag, this cafe’s purr-fect

- Mikaela Mulveney

Gold Coast cat lovers are in for a treat with Southport’s newest cafe providing the usual caffeine fix, delicious food and an adorable, fluffy companion on the side.

Tucked off Marine Parade in the Chinatown precinct, SupermarCat Cafe is impossible to ignore with its large glass windows to the street offering the purr-fect view of the local residents inside. Home to 11 cats – including the munchkin breed – sipping coffee has never been better and staff say the popularity of the cafe has risen since its opening two months ago.

Cafe manager Nina Wang, 31, said overseas, cat or dog cafes were very common and she thought it would be a great addition to the Gold Coast food scene.

“We all love cats,” Ms Wang said.

“We know people also love cats but can’t have them at home, and at least they can come play with them here.”

For those eager to rub shoulders with the adorable felines, spend $15 in store and receive complimentary entry to the cat room – and with the assortment of pastries, burgers and more curated by head chef Marine Gaudin, this is not difficult.

Whether it is feeding them snacks or watching them play, Ms Wang said they had received an extremely positive reaction from the Gold Coast community, with close to 100 five-star reviews online.

“Everyone is loving the experience and the cats … enjoying their time with them while also grabbing coffee and some food,” Ms Wang said.

SupermarCat cafe also offers a range of cat products and furniture to purchase on their online store.

Currently open from 8am to 3pm seven days a week, if the breakfast and lunch menu isn’t purr-suasive, then the furry felines will be because one visit will not be enough.
