Practical little dungarees for babies have buttoned legs and shoulders

THESE QUICK KNIT dungarees for babies feature a garter stitch bib and stocking stitch legs, with buttoned shoulders and press fasteners on the inside legs for easy dressing. They’ll make a cosy, practical garment for little ones sized from birth to six months. The project calls for Bergère de France’s Ideal wool-blend yarn, which can be machine-washed and tumble-dried.

BACK LEFT LEG

Using 3mm needles, cast on 19 ( 21: 24: 26) sts. Work in garter st for 6 rows.

Change to 3.5mm needles. Work in st st until work meas 11 ( 13: 15: 17) cm, AT THE SAME TIME working the Inc row as folls every 4th ( 3rd: 6th: 6th) row 5 ( 7:4: 7) times, then every 2nd ( 0: 4th: 0) row 2 ( 0:3: 0) times: Inc row: K2, M1, K to end. 26 ( 28: 31: 33) sts. When work meas work meas 11 ( 13: 15: 17) cm, leave all sts on a holder.

RIGHT LEG

Using 3mm needles, cast on 19 ( 21: 24: 26) sts. Work in garter st for 6 rows.

Change to 3.5mm needles. Work in st st until work meas 11 ( 13: 15: 17) cm, AT THE SAME TIME working the following Inc row every 4th ( 3rd: 6th: 6th) row 5 ( 7:4: 7) times, then every 2nd ( 0: 4th: 0) row 2 ( 0:3: 0) times: Inc row: K to last 2 sts, M1, K2. 26 ( 28: 31: 33) sts.

When work meas 11 ( 13: 15: 17) cm, leave all sts on a holder. Do not cut yarn.

BODY

With RS facing, K across 26 ( 28: 31: 33) sts for Right Leg, cast on 1 st, then K across 26 ( 28: 31: 33) sts for Left Leg. 53 ( 57: 63: 67) sts. Work in st st until piece meas 26 ( 30: 35: 40) cm.

Change to 3mm needles. Dec row (RS): K3 ( 5:3: 5), *K2tog, K2 ( 2:3: 3); rep from * to last 6 ( 8:0: 7) sts, K2tog 1 ( 1:0: 1) times, K4 ( 6:0: 5). 41 ( 45: 51: 55) sts.

Cont in garter st until piece meas 29 ( 33: 38: 43) cm, ending with a RS row.

SHAPE ARMHOLES

Cast off 5 ( 6:6: 6) sts at beg of next 2 rows. 31 ( 33: 39: 43) sts.

Continue in garter st until piece meas 37 ( 42: 48: 54) cm.

NECK

Next row: K7 ( 8: 10: 11), cast off the 17 ( 17: 19: 21) centre sts, K to end. Continue each side separately until piece meas 38 ( 43: 49: 55) cm.

Next row (buttonhole row): K2 ( 3:4: 4), K2tog, yo, K3 ( 3:4: 5). Knit 3 rows, then cast off. Repeat for the other shoulder strap.

FRONT

Work as for Back to start of Body.

BODY

With RS facing, K across 26 ( 28: 31: 33) sts for Left Leg, cast on 1 st, then K across 26 ( 28: 31: 33) sts for Right Leg. 53 ( 57: 63: 67) sts. Cont as for Back to Shape Armholes.

SHAPE ARMHOLES

Cast off 5 ( 6:6: 6) sts at beg of next 2 rows. 31 ( 33: 39: 43) sts. Continue in garter st until piece meas 34 ( 39: 45: 51) cm.

NECK

Next row: K7 ( 8: 10: 11), cast off the 17 ( 17: 19: 21) centre sts, K to end. Continue each side separately until piece meas 37 ( 42: 48: 54) cm. Cast off rem 7 ( 8: 10: 11) sts.

FINISHING

Using 3mm needles, pick up and knit 50 ( 60: 68: 78) sts along each side of crotch. Work in garter st for 4 rows, then cast off all sts.

Sew side seams of overalls. Sew press studs evenly spaced along crotch edgings, placing the male part on the WS of the front and the female piece on the RS of the back. Attach buttons to front using diagram as a guide. Secure and weave in ends and gently block to measuremen­ts, following any yarn care instructio­ns on the ball band.

24 sts and 31 rows to 10cm over st st on 3.5mm needles. 24 sts and 48 rows to 10cm over garter st on 3mm needles.
