Meet the team!
Our art editor is responsible for the beautiful photography and design within The Knitter
We chat to our art editor, Jude Curle, about her work on The Knitter
How did you come to work on The Knitter?
“I have a degree in graphic design, and have worked as a designer on many different magazines, covering a range of areas including women’s lifestyle, gardening, homes and interiors, and Sunday supplements. I’ve always had a passion for creative crafts; during my time working in London, I studied for an RHS gardening diploma, and took courses in ceramics, life drawing, mosaic making and furniture restoration.
“After moving to the South-West, I worked on various craft magazines, and joined The Knitter just after its launch in 2009. It was exciting to be involved in a new magazine, and to help develop its signature style. We’ve always felt strongly that the photography in The Knitter should be as beautiful as that in any high-end fashion magazine.”
What does your day-to-day job entail?
“I organise all our photoshoots, which includes booking models, choosing locations, styling all the outfits, and directing the photographers. Back in the office, I design the pages of magazine, including the front cover, selecting the photographs from our shoots that not only look lovely, but enable our readers to see all the details of our knitwear projects clearly.”
What’s the best part of your job?
“Without a doubt, being able to work at beautiful locations across the West Country on our photoshoots. I always enjoy working with our brilliant photographers and models, and our lovely hair and make-up artist, Charlotte.”
Are there certain designers whose work you particularly enjoy photographing?
“I love the feminine styles of Jennie Atkinson, the exquisite lace shawls of Anniken Allis, the gorgeous textural patterns created by Emma Vining, and pretty much anything designed for us by Sarah Hatton!
“Stand-out designs during my eight years on The Knitter have to be Jen Arnall-Culliford’s spectacular ‘Golden Wheat Shawl’ from Issue 20 - I love the colour, and the styling of that particular photoshoot. I also like Sarah Hatton’s light and lacy ‘Framboise’ top from Issue 35, and Belinda Boaden’s ‘Hearts and Flowers’ jumper from Issue 10. In fact, Issue 10 is probably my all-time favourite issue - I just love the look and nd feel of it, with its vintage-inspired styling, and its range of elegant, timeless patterns.”
Do you knit much for yourself?
“I do like to knit, but these days I have to be careful of RSI flare-ups, so I don’t knit very often. Plus, I love trying different crafts, and am always eager to learn something new - and when I’ve mastered it, I tend to move on to the next thing…
“Having said that, I’m really keen to learn lace knitting - and this Christmas, I was given a little push in that direction by my colleague Kirstie, who gifted me some beautiful hand-dyed silk and baby yak laceweight. I think that if I ever mastered lace knitting, I would like to make the ‘Golden Wheat Shawl’.”
