Using 4mm needles, cast on 78 ( 86: 94) sts. Begin Chart A as follows: Row 1 (WS): *P6, K2; rep from * to last 6 sts, P6. Row 2: *K6, yo, P2tog; rep from * to last 6 sts, K6. Row 3: As Row 1. Row 4: *K6, P2; rep from * to last 6 sts, K6. Repeat these 4 rows until work meas 10 ( 12: 14) cm, ending on row 1. Begin Chart B as follows: Sizes 1-2 yrs and 5-6 yrs only Row 1 (RS): *C6B, yo, P2tog, C6F, yo, P2tog; rep from * to last 14 sts, C6B, yo, P2tog, C6F. Size 3-4 yrs only Row 1 (RS): *C6B, yo, P2tog, C6F, yo, P2tog; rep from * to last 6 sts, C6B. All sizes Row 2 and all alt rows: *P6, K2; rep from * to last 6 sts, P6. SHAPE NECK

Work in pattern across first 30 ( 32: 36)sts and place these on a stitch holder. Cast off centre 18 ( 22: 22) sts. Work last 30 ( 32: 36) sts in pattern.

NECK RIGHT HAND SIDE

Cont in pattern as set for two more rows, dec 1 st at neck edge on both of these rows. 28 ( 30: 34) sts. Cont in pattern as set across these 28( 30: 34) sts until work meas 33 ( 37: 41)cm, ending on a WS row. Work across these 28 ( 30: 34) sts in Chart B, then turn the work over and cast on 13 sts. 41 ( 43: 47) sts.

BACK RIGHT HAND SIDE

Every WS row: K3, cont to work Chart B as set across remaining sts. Every RS row: Cont to work Chart B as set to last 3 sts, K3. Cont until work meas 53 ( 57: 61)cm. Begin working Chart A as follows: Every WS row: K3, work remaining sts into Chart A pattern. Every RS row: Work Chart A to last 3 sts, K3. Cont as set until work meas 61 ( 69: 77) cm. Cast off.

NECK LEFT HAND SIDE

Transfer sts from stitch holder onto working needle and reattach yarn. 30 ( 32: 36) sts. (WS) Cont in Chart B for two more rows and decrease 1 stitch at neck edge on both of these rows. 28 ( 30: 34) sts. Cont in Chart B across these 28 ( 30: 34) sts until work meas 33 ( 37: 41) cm, ending on a RS row. Work across these 28 ( 30: 34) sts in Chart B, then turn the work over and cast on 13 sts. 41 ( 43: 47) sts.

BACK LEFT HAND SIDE

Every RS row: K3, cont to work Chart B as set across remaining sts. Every WS row: Work Chart B as set to last 3 sts, K3. Last 2 rows set pattern. Cont to work as set, AT THE SAME TIME, after working 4 rows, create a buttonhole by working (K2, yo, P2tog) at beginning of the row. Repeat buttonhole every 5 ( 7: 9) cm until there are 4 in total continuing to work the 3 edge sts in garter st throughout. Cont until work meas 53 ( 57: 61) cm. Every RS row: K3, work remaining sts into Chart A pattern. Every WS row: Work Chart A to last 3 sts, K3. Cont until work meas 61 ( 69: 77)cm. Cast off.

MAKING UP CUFFS

With RS facing, starting 19cm up from front hem edge, pick up and knit 53 ( 63: 73) sts, ending 19cm from back hem edge. Work in garter st for 5 rows. Cast off. Repeat this on the opposite side.

NECK TRIM

With RS facing, pick up and knit 55 ( 59: 63) sts around neck edge. Work in garter st for 2 rows. Cast off.

SIDE SEAMS

With RS facing in, fold work in half and sew side seams from cuff edge to hem edge. Turn work the right way.

TIE

Plait three equal lengths of yarn until it measures 1 metre. Knot each end. Thread the tie around the centre of the work, using the lace holes to thread in and out. Ideally thread this where Chart A changes to Chart B. Tie in a bow at the front.
