BACK

Using 4mm needles and yarn A, cast on 105 ( 115: 125: 135: 145) sts. Row 1 (RS): K2, (P1, K1) to last st, K1. Row 2: K1, (P1, K1) to end. Rep these 2 rows until rib meas 6cm, ending after row 1. **

Next row: P3 ( 2: 4: 2: 5), [M1pw, P9 ( 10: 9: 10: 9)] 11 ( 11: 13: 13: 15) times, M1pw, P to end. 117 ( 127: 139: 149: 161) sts.

Change to 5mm needles and st st with patt: Row 1 (RS): Beg on st 2 ( 7: 1: 6: 10) and ending on st 8 ( 3: 9: 4: 10), work row 1 of chart. Row 2: Beg on st 8 ( 3: 9: 4: 10) and ending on st 2 ( 7: 1: 6: 10), work row 2 of chart. Rows 3-16: Cont in patt, rep rows 1-2 seven times but working rows 3-16 of chart. These 16 rows set the patt. Cont in patt until work meas 43cm from beg, measured through centre of work, ending after a WS row. Place a marker at centre of last row.

SHAPE ARMHOLES

Cast off loosely 9 ( 9: 10: 10: 11) sts at beg of next 2 rows. 99 ( 109: 119: 129: 139) sts. Dec 1 st at each end of next 5 ( 7: 9: 11: 13) rows, then on every foll RS row until 79 ( 85: 91: 95: 101) sts rem.

Work straight until Back meas 21 ( 23: 24: 25: 27) cm from marker, ending after a P row.

SHAPE SHOULDERS

Cast off loosely 8 ( 8: 9: 9: 10) sts at beg of next 4 rows, then 7 ( 9: 9: 10: 10) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Slip rem 33 ( 35: 37: 39: 41) sts on a stitch holder and leave.

FRONT

Work as for Back until Front meas 16 ( 16: 18: 20: 22) rows less than back up to start of shoulder shaping, ending after a WS row.

SHAPE NECK

Next row: Patt 28 ( 30: 32: 33: 35), turn. Cont on this group of sts for left half of neck. Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 5 rows. 23 ( 25: 27: 28: 30) sts. Work 10 ( 10: 12: 14: 16) rows straight, thus ending at armhole edge.

SHAPE SHOULDER

Cast off loosely 8 ( 8: 9: 9: 10) sts at beg of next row and foll alt row. Work 1 row straight. Cast off rem 7 ( 9: 9: 10: 10) sts. With RS facing, slip next 23 ( 25: 27: 29: 31) sts (centre sts) on a stitch holder and leave. Neatly rejoin yarns A and B and patt to end of row. Cont on these 28 ( 30: 32: 33: 35) sts for right half of neck. Work as left half but working 1 row more before shaping shoulder.

SLEEVES

Using 4mm needles and yarn A, cast on 35 ( 37: 39: 41: 43) sts. Work as for Back to **.

Next row: P7 ( 8: 9: 4: 5), (M1pw, P10) 2 ( 2: 2: 3: 3) times, M1pw, P to end. 38 ( 40: 42: 45: 47) sts.

Change to 4.5mm needles. Beg with a K row, work 2 ( 4: 2: 4: 4) rows in st st.

Cont in st st, shaping sleeve by inc 1 st at each end of next row, then on every foll 8th ( 6th: 4th: 4th: 4th) row until there are 48 ( 50: 54: 65: 73) sts, then on every foll 6th row for all sizes until there are 68 ( 72: 78: 83: 87) sts.

Cont straight until sleeve meas 47 ( 47: 47: 48: 48) cm from beg, ending after a P row.

SHAPE TOP

Cast off loosely 9 ( 9: 10: 10: 11) sts at beg of next 2 rows. 50 ( 54: 58: 63: 65) sts. Work 0 ( 0: 4: 4: 6) rows straight.

Dec 1 st at each end of next row, then on every foll RS row until 26 ( 28: 34: 37: 39) sts rem, then on every row until 16 ( 18: 24: 27: 29) sts rem. Cast off loosely in yarn A.

TO MAKE UP NECKBAND

Join left shoulder. Using 4mm needles and yarn B, with RS facing, knit across 33 ( 35: 37: 39: 41) sts from back neck, pick up and knit 16 ( 16: 17: 18: 19) sts evenly down left side of neck, knit across 23 ( 25: 27: 29: 31) sts from front neck, finally pick up and knit 17 ( 17: 18: 19: 20) sts evenly up right side of neck. 89 ( 93: 99: 105: 111) sts. Beginning with row 2, work 8 rows in rib as on Back. Cast off evenly in rib, working firmly round shaped corners of front neck.

ARMHOLE EDGINGS

Join right shoulder and edges of neckband. Using 4mm needles and yarn B, with RS facing, pick up and knit 89 ( 93: 99: 103: 109) sts evenly round armhole. Beginning with row 2, work 6 rows in rib as on Back. Cast off evenly in rib.

FINISHING

Omitting ribbing, press work on WS, following any yarn care instructio­ns on the ball band. Sew in sleeves. Join side and sleeve seams. Press seams.
