COMBINING ZIGZAGS, diamonds and rib patterns, this little cardigan has a smart textured fabric. It’s worked in one piece to the armholes, and finished with a ribbed collar. The design is knitted in a superwash merino yarn from King Cole, which comes in a wide choice of colours.

BODY

(worked in one piece to armhole)

Using 3.25mm needles, cast on

124 ( 128: 132: 136: 144) sts.

Row 1 (RS): P1, *K2, P2; rep from * to last 3 sts, K2, P1.

Row 2: K1, P2, *K2, P2; rep from * to last st, K1.

These 2 rows set rib.

Work 10 ( 10: 10: 12: 12) rows more as set, dec 1 ( 1: 0: 0: 1) st and inc 0 ( 0: 1: 1: 0) st at end of last row.

123 ( 127: 133: 137: 143) sts.

Change to 4mm needles.

Row 1 (RS): Reading from right to left, work row 1 of Body Chart, beg with stitch 3 ( 1: 3: 1: 3) and ending with stitch 15 ( 17: 15: 17: 15), working 10-st rep as shown.

Row 2 (WS): Reading from left to right, work row 2 of Body Chart, beg with stitch 15 ( 17: 15: 17: 15) and ending with stitch

3 ( 1: 3: 1: 3), working 10-st rep as shown. These 2 rows set chart placement.

Rep chart rows 3 to 10 as set 5 ( 5: 6: 6: 6) times.

Work rows 11 to 28 as set on chart once, inc 0 ( 1: 0: 1: 0) st at end of last row.

RIGHT FRONT

Starting from row 15 of Body Chart, cont as folls:

Next row (RS): Patt 29 ( 30: 32: 33: 34). Turn and leave rem sts on a holder. Cont on these sts only for Right Front, working as set until chart row 28 has been worked.

Next row (RS): Knit.

Next row: P0 ( 0: 2: 0: 0), K1 ( 2: 2: 0: 1), *P3, K2; rep from * to last 3 sts, P3.

These 2 rows set ridge pattern placement. Cont as set until armhole meas 9 ( 9: 10: 10: 10) cm, ending with RS facing for next row.

SHAPE FRONT NECK

Next row: Cast off 4 ( 5: 6: 6: 5) sts, patt to end. Work 1 row.

Dec 1 st at neck edge of next 3 rows, foll RS row, then on foll 4th row.

20 ( 20: 21: 22: 24) sts.

Cont without shaping until armhole meas 15 ( 15: 16: 16: 17) cm, ending with WS facing for next row.

SHAPE SHOULDER

Cast off 10 ( 10: 10: 11: 12) sts, patt to end. Work 1 row.

BACK

With RS facing, rejoin yarn to rem sts. Starting from row 15 of Body Chart, patt 65 ( 67: 69: 71: 75) sts for Back, turn and leave rem sts on a holder.

Work as set until chart row 28 has been worked, then cont as folls:

Row 1 (RS): Knit, inc 0 ( 1: 0: 1: 0) sts at end of row.

With RS facing, using 3.25mm needles, pick up and knit 84 ( 92: 96: 100: 104) sts evenly up left front edge.

Row 1 (WS): K1, *P2, K2; rep from * to last 3 sts, P2, K1.

Row 2: K3, *P2, K2; rep from * to last st, K1. These 2 rows set rib.

Work 1 row more.

Next row: Rib 4 ( 3: 2: 4: 4), [cast off 2 sts, rib 13 ( 15: 16: 16: 17)] 5 times, cast off 2 sts, rib 3 ( 2: 2: 4: 3).

Next row: Rib to end, casting on 2 sts over each gap created in previous row.

With RS facing, using 3.25mm needles, starting and ending halfway across buttonband­s, pick up and knit 23 ( 24: 24: 26: 27) sts up right side of neck, knit across 25 ( 26: 27: 28: 27) sts from back neck holder and AT THE SAME TIME dec 1 ( 1: 2: 0: 0) sts and inc 0 ( 0: 0: 1: 0) st, pick up and knit

23 ( 24: 24: 26: 27) sts down left side of neck. 70 ( 73: 73: 81: 81) sts.

Row 1 (WS of body, RS of collar): K1, (K2, P2) 6 ( 6: 6: 7: 7) times, K2, (P1, K2) 6 ( 7: 7: 7: 7) times, (P2, K2) 6 ( 6: 6: 7: 7) times, K1.

Rep these 2 rows once, then Row 1 once more.

Cast off in rib.

Sew sleeves in position, easing fabric to fit. Join sleeve seams. Sew on buttons.

Weave in ends. Pin to size, cover with damp cloths and leave until dry, following any yarn care instructio­ns on the ball band.
