Dear reader,
The COVID-19 outbreak is affecting every part of society, including newspapers and magazines.
At Schwartz Media, we are anticipating and preparing for a significant downturn in advertising. The arts sector, which our titles do so much to support, has a freeze on shows to promote. The travel industry is in lockdown. Others will follow. In the short term, a third of the revenue we use to make our titles will likely disappear.
Schwartz Media will survive this crisis, but we need the support of readers. Now is the time to subscribe to our titles, to give digital subscriptions to friends in isolation, to buy The Monthly and The Saturday Paper and encourage others to do so as well. In addition to these titles, listen to our daily podcast, 7am, which is covering the virus every weekday.
It is a perverse outcome of this crisis that just as quality journalism becomes more necessary, its production becomes more precarious. What we need now is calm and trustworthy information.
Schwartz Media has moved to a remote working model. We have set up structures to ensure we will continue to produce our journalism – both essential news on the virus, and on the other stories that are not getting the attention they deserve. A lot will be quietly buried in the next few months, but our journalists won’t miss any of it.
Subscriptions to The Saturday Paper start from $69. A subscription to The Monthly starts at $44.95.
