HARBOUR MASTER’S HAVEN A CHARMER
This stunning Queenslander, dating back to around 1920, is a piece of Cairns history that has been immaculately maintained and transported to an enormous Kuranda block boasting a dam and a seasonal creek
A HIDDEN gem from Cairns’ maritime history now situated on a massive 10-acre block in Kuranda is up for sale.
This iconic five-bedroom, two-bathroom Queenslander at 17 Leilas Way was built around 1920 to serve as the Cairns harbour master’s home.
It was moved up from the Cairns CBD to Kuranda in the 1980s and has all the charm you would expect from a historic Queenslander, from stunning timber floors and towering ceilings to traditional casement windows, which have all been immaculately maintained.
Ray White Cairns Beaches agent Sonia Poole said the property was full of character, with lots of hidden pockets and beautiful vistas surrounding it.
“It’s a gorgeous family property – young children could play and get lost for hours on those 10 acres. There’s quite a large gully that fills up in the wet season,” she said.
“It’s still got the original doors with handles as high as my shoulder, and the ceilings are 5m high.”
The current owner has endeavoured to retain the historic elements of the home, even going as far as installing a century-old balustrade from the original Cairns Post Office building.
The block itself is rare in that it offers two street access points, a functioning dam and a seasonal creek.
Ms Poole said the owner was also in the process of a boundary realignment on the 10 acres, which means it can be subdivided.
She said this would be huge for potential buyers.
The property will be going up for auction on December 17 if not sold before then.
