Bursary winner Darcy makes world his stage

-

YEARS of rehearsing lines and wearing stage make-up have paid off for 16-year-old Darcy Maher.

The Young Company actor received a full scholarship to Queensland Theatre’s Residency Week, and said he was very excited to head to the op- portunity in Brisbane.

“The scholarship covers accommodation and flights, and when we’re there we’ll be doing workshops and live shows and watching good performers,” he said.

“I heard about it from a drama teacher who said I should apply, so I went to the website and had to write an essay on why I deserve the scholarship and give them a headshot and a CV of my theatre experience.

“I got a call saying I’d gotten the scholarship and I really didn’t expect it, I was shocked and so happy.’’

Darcy said his love for acting started a decade ago when he first took to the stage.

“I’ve been acting for a long time, since I was about six or seven, mainly at The Young Company but also at eisteddfods and in school produc- tions,” he said. “It’s so fun to play another character, to be someone else who is completely different to you, and to become somebody else.”

Darcy will head down to Brisbane next month for Queensland Theatre’s Residency Week.
