School on course for first year

ENROLMENTS are now being taken for the newly named Cairns State Special School.

The $25 million Woree facility will cater for students from Prep to Year 12 with an intellectu­al impairment and open its doors near year.

Chris Simmons has been appointed principal and has 30 years’ experience in education systems around Australia.

“Cairns State Special School will provide a comprehens­ive, multidisci­plinary approach to cater to the diverse learning needs and priorities of students from Prep to Year 12,” she said.

“Our students will be provided personalis­ed and relevant opportunit­ies to reach their potential and have a voice and choice in their learning and pathway.

“Work is under way establishi­ng authentic and purposeful connection­s that will provide support for students and their families into the future.”

A naming ceremony for the school will be held in January.
