Litter of stranded pups give paws to consider

- KIMBERLEY VLASIC

SIX sickly pups are in need of some tender loving care after being found in various backyards around White Rock.

Over the past week, Southside Veterinary Clinic has received the mixed breed pups one-by-one in a bizarre series of events staff say highlights the importance of desexing.

“This particular case is unusual but we see stray animals on a daily basis,” said vet nurse Zoe Burtt.

“We send animals to the council because we just physically can’t hold them.

“Their conditions vary. Some are very ill with hookworm and quite underweight, some are slightly healthier.”

White Rock resident Bianca Weller was shocked to find one of the puppies in her backyard on Wednesday night.

“It was howling and crying,” she said.

“I was trying to figure out how it got in and thought it had crawled under a fence until I heard there were dogs in other yards.”

With local shelters overflowing with unwanted animals, Ms Burtt and her colleague are caring for the pups while carers are arranged.

“We want to find the owner and also make sure the mother of the pups is safe and in good care, and to make sure there aren’t any more puppies out there,” she said.

If you own the pups or are looking to foster, call Animal Rehoming Cairns and Tablelands District on 0418 732 204.
