TIPS FROM THE EXPERT

WHY DOES THIS MATTER?

I think a lot of people, a lot of women feel they need to put on a mask to society and ask the question ‘Do I need to change to suit the job I want or position I want?’.

We need to give women permission to express their authentic self. They will then feel comfortable and gain self-esteem.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Think about what is a personal brand – that’s made up of unique qualities, values, what you stand for, your goals.

Look at what actionable steps you can take to express these. That’s where personal branding comes into it.

WON’T I BE SOMETHING I’M NOT?

Every single woman has different personality traits. They also work in different environments.

Look at what style you would like to express, then look at what environment you’re in, such as a boardroom meeting, and whether you can dial up certain aspects, or need to dial down.

HOW CAN I PUT THAT INTO PRACTICE?

Maybe a floral dress is not appropriate for a lawyer’s office, so maybe to be feminine it’s having a bit of lace on a cami or a singlet, maybe a bit of floral somewhere in the outfit.

I had a client who always went for the safe option – black – but realised she was holding back on what her personality was, which was colourful and creative. We looked at what she could do but still look polished and professional.
