Scots to consider own exit
The Scottish Government has this weekend officially launched another bid for independence in the wake of this year’s Brexit outcome.
THE Scottish Government has this weekend officially launched another bid for independence, declaring the UK post-Brexit had fundamentally changed the debate of Scotland’s place in the world.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the new bid for an in- dependent Scotland was the “biggest ever political listening device” and a “new debate for these new times” as she symbolically chose Stirling to launch the campaign, the city where William Wallace defeated English rule in 1297.
With the UK still in a state of flux post-Brexit and most of the nation only just coming back from summer holidays, the Scottish National Party leader made her much anticipated move almost two years to the day since the Scottish independence referendum.
“The UK that existed before June 23 has fundamentally changed,” she said.
“The debate now is whether we should go forward, protecting our place as a European nation or go backwards, under a Tory government with very different priorities.
“And while we will pursue all options to protect our interests, the debate must include an examination of independence in what are profoundly changed circumstances.”
The September 2014 referendum saw Scots vote by 55 per cent to 45 per cent in favour of remaining in the UK.
